5 free things to do before your kids go back to school

This is a bittersweet time of year. On the one hand, I want to hang on to these lazy, unscheduled summer days. But another part of me longs for structure, afterschool activities and a few hours a day when my house isn't overrun with children.

No matter how you feel about it, one thing is certain: the first day of school is near (like it or not).

Before the ol' school bell rings again, here are a few FREE, family-friendly activities taking place around Chicago that will help you squeeze every last bit out of your summer.

Catch a family-friendly flick under the stars, courtesy of the Chicago Park District's Movies in the Parks Program. Upcoming showings include Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Shrek 2.
On Sunday August 22nd and 29th at noon, you can see the very excellent Emerald City Theater Company perform The True Story of the Three Little Pigs on the Great Lawn of Millennium Park.
On Tuesdays from 11am-2pm and 5-8pm, check out the Summer Outdoor Creation Station at the Museum of Contemporary Art. This free opportunity for creative exploration runs through September 14th.
