Mr. Brown Thumb and The Dirt on Green have already posted about this great opportunity, but in case you don't read those excellent blogs (which you should), I wanted to tell you about the One Seed Chicago program here on Wee Windy City. This is an excellent (and economical) way to get your kids interested in gardening.
NeighborSpace's One Seed Chicago project is a chance for Chicago gardeners to vote on their favorite seed and then participate in the growing process together throughout the summer.
Here is how it works. Go to the One Seed Chicago website and vote for one of the three prairie seed candidates for 2010. Provide your Chicago mailing address. Voting continues through April 1, 2010. The winning seed will be announced at the annual Green and Growing Fair at the Garfield Park Conservatory on April 24, 2010. Seed packets will be mailed to participants at no charge.
plant that was once commonly found in the prairies around Chicago, but
that is now rare in the wild outside of prairie restoration projects
and cultivated gardens. Once established this native plant will require
little water, is less prone to diseases and attracts beneficial insects
and birds to a garden.
Don't miss this easy and economical opportunity to introduce your kids to the pleasures of gardening. Larger quantities of seed are available for schools so this would also be a great project for urban school gardens.

My favorite seed by far is TickleMe Plant Seeds. I found them at http://www.ticklemeplant.com With them you can easily grow the TickleMe Plant that MOVES when you Tickle It! The leaves instantly close and even the branches droop when Tickled. I cast my vote for kids favorite plant to grow from seed. The TickleMe Plant. It even produces pretty pink flowers. If you want to get kids excited about science and nature Vote for the TickleMe Plant...my students love it.
