Out of Left Field: Notes from around baseball

  • The divisional races with the most separation are the NL West and NL East at just four games. Across baseball, 13 teams are within four games of first.
  • Oddly, both Wild Card races are less compelling than any of the divisional races: the Braves lead by five games while the Yankees lead by 5.5.
  • Jose Bautista--who deserves to win the MVP this season--still isn't getting enough attention: he's 3rd in the AL in hitting (.332), 1st in HR by a wide margin (31), and 5th in RBI (68). He's also 1st in OBP, SLG and OPS, and 2nd in runs scored.
  • Both Drew Stubbs (Reds) and Adam Dunn are threatening Mark Reynolds's single-season strikeout record of 223.
  • The Cubs have passed the Orioles and no longer have the worst ERA in the majors!
  • The Cubs remain last in the majors, however, in stolen bases; they're one behind the Cardinals.
  • And they're still last in errors.
  • Phillies starters have tossed 11 complete games, more than the Indians, Royals, Reds, Red Sox, Brewers, Cubs, Astros and Padres combined.
  • Just as you'd expect, the NL ERA leaders are Jair Jurrjens and Jeff Karstens.
