Jackie Robinson West Wins Game One Of The Little League World Series

Jackie Robinson West Wins Game One Of The Little League World Series

So this afternoon the baseball boys from Morgan Park came out swinging, literally with a first inning home run and the hits kept coming leading to a slaughter rule shortened (10 run lead through 5 innings), game. The final score was 12-2 over Lynwood Washington.

Also today Dicks Sporting Goods on 11th & Canal got restocked with 500 new shirts this morning and I can attest only the south loop location is selling the shirts, I called the Lombard location (full disclosure I worked for Dicks Sporting Goods many years ago), and neither they nor the Orland Park location will have the shirts. But per the manager of the Dicks Sporting Goods on Canal, another batch of shirts will be there in the morning but be there early, I'm told people were waiting for them this morning along with a NBC5 news camera. There is a table set up in the front of the store with the shirts.

Today was also the viewing party at the Jackie Robinson West home field, hosted by the Chicago White Sox featuring their mascot South Paw.
The boys next game is Sunday at 2 P.M., remember this is double elimination (you have to lose twice to be eliminated), and soon we’ll be down to eight teams as the tournament rolls on.

But first let me give the rules and details of little league baseball, the kids (because some teams have girls), are between 11-13 years old (but some are are tall as six feet), and they play six innings of baseball (unless the 10 run rule we observed today), the size of the field is 2/3 of a major league park (like US Cellular Field), its only 60 feet to each base (instead of 90 in the pros), and the outfield wall is only 225 on all sides. In the pros its usually 400 to straight center at at least 325 feet to the corners. The the pitchers mound is only 46 feet from home plate unlike the 60 feet six inches in the pros.

Speaking of pitching, to preserve the kids arms (and since most play more than one position), the most any pitcher can throw in one game is 85 pitches and if a pitcher only throws 35 pitchers or less, he/she can be used in the next game (as the Lynwood Washington team used a middle reliever for only 33), thus you can advantage of your pitching depth.

As for the Jackie Robinson West team, as I mentioned a couple of days ago, I knew growing up this was a powerhouse organization and it was confirmed by ESPN that 28 teams make up that organization, not just one team. But man they are  a fundamentally sound, super athletic team, they hit the ball like it owes them money. The third pitch of the game was hit into dead center field. Four home runs in all were hit in their hard swinging victory. Might have to start calling them the "Morgan Street Marauders", they are impressive at the plate as they are on the field and on the pitchers mound.

But this is just game one, their next game is Sunday at 2 P.M. vs the vaulted Las Vegas team and will be shown locally on ABC7 Chicago. Go JRW!
