This past Saturday was the "Burndown at Sundown" an afternoon of features at Joliet's Route 66 Dragway.
The event included the jet cars in the video that is included but also Division Three NHRA (National Hot Rod Association), regional races in the categories of top alcohol (the fuel the cars burn), pro stock (the cars that look most like street cars), competition eliminator (a budget class for regular guys), super stock & pro modified (more professional cars), that are not like you would see on the street.
But the suprise for even us hard core drag racing fans was pro stock snowmobiles, yes, snowmobiles like people ride in the winter. But they ran as fast as a 150 miles per hour and on dry ground are very much like racing motorcyles.
This race was a nice prelude to the highest level of NHRA drag racing (the Full Throttle series that is seen on ESPN 2), that will be in Joliet at the end of the month.
It was truly a entertaining event (despite the heat), and some downtime due to the track needed to be cleaned several times, but that's racing.
