Sunday Song of the Day- "Powa" by tUnE-yArDs

I'll never forget my first introduction to Merrill Garbus, the mastermind behind the DIY, afro-art rock project, tUnE-yArDs, at the Bottom Lounge opening for Dirty Projectors in November '09.  I was blown away by the power of her vocals and unique performance.  Though I love Dirty Projectors, their show didn't hold a candle to the opening act's.

She played "Powa" at that show and I remember searching high and low the next day for a recorded version of it only to find shoddy live show recordings on YouTube.  Imagine my excitement when that song and many of the other songs I heard that night in November popped up on Garbus' sophomore album, w h o k i l l.

The new album has been a hit among the critics, this blogger included. Now on the label 4AD, Garbus has lost none of her creative and contagious weirdness, but pushed her arrangements to a level Bird-Brains only hinted at.

I can't wait to see tUnE-yArDs again at Lincoln Hall on May 10!
