Microwave Popcorn is Terrible for You

Microwave Popcorn is Terrible for You

I have a bunch of microwave popcorn from a Costco trip years ago in my basement.  Since I am always looking for healthy after school snack options, I began to research it before giving it to my children.

According to the Food Babe,

"The bag almost all microwave popcorn varieties come in is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This chemical is the same toxic stuff found in teflon pots and pans. It can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time. This chemical when heated has been linked to infertility, cancer and other diseases in lab animals. No long term studies have been conducted on humans, but the EPA lists this substance as a carcinogen. "

Another toxin in microwave popcorn is diacetyl, an FDA-approved chemical found in the fake butter flavoring. There is a term called Popcorn Lung detailed in a recent Huffington Post article. Read this surprising excerpt from the article below.

"Last month a jury in Colorado awarded 59-year-old Wayne Watson $7.2 million from three companies for damages caused by microwave popcorn. The reason? In 2007 Mr. Watson contracted a rare but serious lung disease, in which inflammation and scarring block airways, severely restricting air flow, as in Watson’s case, by as much as 60 percent. This disease, called bronchiolitis obliterans, is irreversible and, when it becomes life-threatening, the only treatment is a lung transplant."

I am throwing away every last microwave popcorn packet collecting dust in my basement.  I will also never buy it again and I hope you don't either.  After all, it isn't that hard to make a batch of fresh popcorn on the stovetop, and it tastes so much better.

Did you know how terrible microwave popcorn is for you?

P.S.  Ramen Noodles are also bad for you (sorry, I used to love them too.)
