Stay home and make homemade play dough

In Chicago it is bitter cold and it appears most of the country is experiencing this winter freeze.

Bad weather days are difficult for moms with little kids.  I often wonder if it is worth it to bundle the kids in snow pants, boots, jackets, gloves, hats and scarfs only to take them off a few minutes later when you reach the destination.

Instead, I usually choose to stay home where it is warm and do special projects with the kiddos.  My favorite is homemade play dough.  It is easy, always fun and best of all if the kids eat it - it is okay

 Homemade Play dough

3 cups flour
1.5 cups salt
6 tsp. cream of tarter
3 tbsp. oil
3 cups water

Mix all the ingredients together and stir over low heat.  Stir rapidly until no longer sticky.

I used whole-wheat flour (because that is what I had in the house) that is why it is brownish.

Then add food coloring to desired color or colors.

This makes a large amount and I often break it into baggies and save some for the next bad weather day.

Mom bonus: You get a nice little arm workout while stirring AND try playing with the play dough yourself, it can be a stress reliever.

Do you take your kids out in freezing temperatures?
