Chemical-Free Natural Mosquito Repellent

Chemical-Free Natural Mosquito Repellent

It is that time of year when we need a natural mosquito repellent.  The sticky, sweltering long summer days where we are joined outdoors by pesky mosquitos is here.

My family is suffientely covered in red mosquito bites and bumps and I always struggle as I try to resist the chemical laden brand named bug repellents.  In hopes of keeping the bugs away without further harming my (and your) family, here are some all-natural substitutes.

1/2 litre of alcohol
100 gram of whole cloves
100 ml of baby oil or similar (almond, sesame, chamomile, lavender, fennel etc)

Leave cloves to marinate in alcohol four days
Stir every morning and evening
After 4 days add the oil
It's now ready to use.

How to use:

Gently rub a few drops into the skin of the arms and legs.
Observe the mosquitoes fleeing the room.
Repels fleas on pets too.

Another option it to cut 3 limes and insert 10-15 cloves and place on plate to eliminate mosquitos from your area.  Certain easy to grow plants repel mosquitos such as citronella, horsemint, marigolds, ageratum and catnip. Read more here about the plants.

Peppermint diluted with water and sprayed on the skin will keep the biting bugs away from your body. (The menthol activates neurons in the insects that warn it of a dangerous substance).

Finally don't attract mosquitos by wearing dark clothing (easier to see) or fruity or floral fragrances (signal a welcome environment).

How do you keep the mosquitos away?
