I've heard about it for a long time. I'm not sure what I thought it was. Maybe like cookie dough? Yeah. Like that. And there's so many "butters" now. Almond butter. Cashew butter. Pretty much any kind of nut butter you can think of. So, I guess I wasn't all that revved up to eat cookie butter. I guess I got over my cookie dough phase a long time ago, and it didn't sound that appealing to me.
I tried some the other day. My friend, L, works at Trader Joe's, and I happened to run into her there as she was getting off work. Somehow, the topic came up and I said that I had never tried it. She said we should go back to demo and I should have some. (If you don't know, if you ever want to try something at TJ's, they will open it up and you can try it. It still feels weird and wrong, but that is their policy. A kindly man actually got me to buy some chocolate that way one time.)
Well, I tried it. First of all, no one who had ever ranted and raved about it before ever mentioned that the cookie featured in the cookie butter was this "Speculoos" cookie that TJ's sells. It's this light, ginger snap/bread kind of cookie that I adore. And I guess the butter is essentially ... this cookie and margarine. That's it. Ground up cookie and oil. Just cookie spread. WTF.
It's weird. The consistency is that of peanut butter, but the taste is cookie, and it seems wrong to be able to eat a cookie like you're eating frosting. It seems crazy. I loved it, but my mind hated it -- like SUPER danger zone.
I'm sure you've all already had this miracle nightmare, but if you haven't, go or stay away, whichever seems best. I just know there can't ever be a jar of this in my house. I will be ruined fast. Cookie butter. Yumsville. Wrecker of homes.
