So, I know people get real weird when you equate pets to children. I come pretty close to that scale, though. I've had my cat for 19 years, and that's a pretty long time. I also am almost 40 and don't plan on having children, so she's as close as I'm going to come to nurturing that maternal instinct. Strangely enough, as much as I can hang with the "pets are pretty close to kids" thing, I do find one thing to be pretty interesting that I wish would change -- one step I'm not ready to go in putting pets on the EXACT same plane as children.
I have a cat, but I love nearly all animals -- especially dogs. I just love them. I have a special affinity for them and they for me. Because I don't have the time for taking care of a dog properly, I don't own one. I think you really have to be able to love and care for one if you want to have one in your life; you really have to put the time and energy into training one and then be able to put the time and energy into being around for the dog as well. But I do really love loving them and petting them and giving them good energy. So, occasionally, I will go to a dog beach or a dog park and see if I can get a little dog love.
You would think I was a pedophile at a playground. It's SO weird. It makes sense that if you were a parent, you'd be on guard for some creeper creeping at a playground -- someone with no children, hanging around, looking to talk to your kids, being overly interested in them, etc. BUT THESE ARE DOGS!!! They're NOT kids. It's just so bizarre how I get this weirdo vibe from people when they notice I don't have a dog. The SAME vibe you'd give someone at a playground if they didn't have a kid. They laugh and talk with the other dog parents, but you can totally see them giving me side eye. I want to be like ... what the hell do you think I'm going to do??? I just want to give your dog a pet!
That being said, I have some friends and acquaintances whose dogs I'd like to meet in real life. I've seen them on Facebook and heard lots about them. Let me tell you about them.
