For the first time since 1990, Notre Dame will be hosting a night football game when USC comes to South Bend this fall. Not since September of 1990 when the Irish beat Michigan 24-20 has Notre Dame Stadium played host to a night game, but will do so on October 22 this fall.
As a lifelong Irish fan but only being 25, I don't remember night games at Notre Dame Stadium. I know I've always enjoyed when they take part in road games that start under the lights and thought it would be cool to host another night game one day but as long as NBC had the television rights I didn't think it would be possible.
I couldn't be more excited for this as a fan and can only wonder how high tickets will be scalped for once the game comes around, especially considering the Irish will likely be favorites in nearly each of their games leading up to hosting USC.
My other thought is that the idea of hosting night games can't do anything but be positive, even in the littlest of ways for recruiting. Nearly every other big time program plays under the lights at home so if nothing else its another thing Brian Kelly and company will be able to pitch to 16 and 17 year olds.
NBC has obviously started to buy into Kelly and the Notre Dame football program, otherwise they wouldn't allow for two straight seasons of prime-time games on their air, after showing the Army game at Yankee Stadium last year. Let's just hope they're right.
