Former SEALs on Maersk Alabama Cause of Death

The AP headline, “Respiratory Failure Named In Deaths Of 2 SEALS” definitely caught my attention. Before my browser could open the story, I was wondering…Respiratory failure? Is that some sort of euphemism for strangulation? Were they somehow gassed? Poisoned? Drugged? Then, I read the article. Which lead me to this one, filed four days earlier... Read more »

Soldier Suicide There is Hope

22 a day. Some say that number is much higher, over 100 a day when all veterans are included. Even 1 a day is too many. It is an issue that everyone seems to know about, but no one really knows what to do. For too many a soldier survived life in a war zone,... Read more »

Gold Star Mothers Address Wisconsin National Guard (Dis) Honor Guard

Yesterday, a story aired on TV in Milwaukee, Wisconsin about National Guardsman Teresa Harrison’s photos going viral on Facebook and the internet. In short, this soldier posted a selfie with the comment “It’s so damn cold…WHY have a funeral outside!? Somebody’s getting a jacked up flag…” A second photo was also posted, and of the... Read more »

Super Bowl Commercial Gets Gold Star Pin

Super Bowl commercials generate as much excitement for some as the game itself. For those whose hometown teams are in this ultimate contest of America’s most popular sport, the breaks in action are time to run and answer nature’s call, grab the next course in the snack lineup or another beverage. For many others, they’d... Read more »

DoD Cuts Imminent Danger Pay

Last week, the Department of Defense updated which areas of the world qualify for Imminent Danger Pay. I agree with this decision and think it supports our troops in harm’s way. Sounds counter-intuitive to support cutting a portion of the pay of deployed troops, but as with most things, there is more to all this... Read more »

What Isn't Cut In The Budget

Previously, we looked at what has been cut. Now let’s look at what wasn’t. Of course, Congressional pay and benefits weren’t even discussed. Congress did grant a 1% salary increase to both Federal employees and active duty military personnel. But, with a 2% cost of living increase projected for 2014 that still translates to a... Merry Christmas My Friend, A Soldiers Silent Night

It’s Christmas Eve and all around the world, many of our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Guardsmen are far from home. More than 50,000 of them are in places where their lives are at risk, doing a job most could never imagine much less endure. At no point in the history of this country have... Read more »

The Dishonorable Cut the Pensions of the Honorable in 2014 Budget

Of What People By What People Our Congress, indeed our entire system of government is predicated on the principal, ‘of the people, by the people, for the people’. With an approval rating of just 6%, it’s interesting to ponder just who are ‘the people’ our elected officials in Washington are representing. The latest budget debacle... Read more »

Being Thankful for Religious Zealots

I’m thankful I had the great good fortune to be born in this country, even at this point in it’s history. We have our problems, many of which are polarizing the nation. But, because of the foresight of our Founding Fathers and the multitudes who have come to our shores throughout the generations, we have... Read more »

Obama Apology Letter to Afghan People

This misleading headline has been quickly denounced as false by Susan Rice, Obama’s national security advisor. “No such letter has been drafted or delivered. There is not a need for the United States to apologize to Afghanistan,” was the statement she made on CNN’s “Situation Room”. She further stated she does not know where these... Read more »

    Denise Williams

Born and bred in Chicago, now living in the wilds of far suburbia. I'm a Gold Star Mom, a wife and step-mom to two terrific boys. My views are generally politically and socially conservative, though I am far from a Party line Republican. I believe in this country, our Constitution and above all, in the right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I believe our government is supposed to serve the people, not tell them how to live. To me, this is just common sense, but since it seems to be a minority opinion, it has become "Uncommon Sense".
