Soldier Suicide There is Hope

22 a day. Some say that number is much higher, over 100 a day when all veterans are included. Even 1 a day is too many. It is an issue that everyone seems to know about, but no one really knows what to do. For too many a soldier survived life in a war zone,... Read more »

"Happy" Memorial Day

I’ve noticed a lot of controversy this year surrounding Memorial Day. In the past, just getting people to recognize it is not National Mattress Sale Day or National BBQ Day was a big deal. Of course, those efforts still continue and intentional misuses of the holiday still offend military and veteran families, none more so... Read more »

Inauguration Traditions are Clues to Policy

President and Mrs. Obama have given a lot of lip service to the support of our military and their families, but is it a genuine commitment or mere pandering? There is ample photographic and video-graphic proof of both the President and First Lady’s attendance at and participation in events for our military, particularly with military... Read more »

The Newest Veterans

When we think of war veterans, we generally think of old men in VFW hats. What we don’t think of is nineteen year old boys, but those are the veterans I met in May of 2011. The 101st Airborne (Air Assault) out of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky was returning from a year-long deployment to Afghanistan. This... Read more »

Red Fridays - Thank You

Red Fridays - Thank You
This will be the last in the “Red Fridays” series, but I’m sure it won’t be the last time I write about our military and veterans. From the beginning, I have wanted to expose some of the issues and concerns our service members past and present face. I find it disgraceful the way our military... Read more »

Red Fridays - National Gold Star Mothers Day

Red Fridays - National Gold Star Mothers Day

Red Fridays - Military Grace

Red Fridays - Military Grace
There is a cartoon that has been circulating for years in the military community that always get a laugh out of me. Not just because it is funny, but because there is a dark truth in it. It shows a couple guys who are obviously supposed to represent Taliban fighters running and screaming; in the background... Read more »

    Denise Williams

Born and bred in Chicago, now living in the wilds of far suburbia. I'm a Gold Star Mom, a wife and step-mom to two terrific boys. My views are generally politically and socially conservative, though I am far from a Party line Republican. I believe in this country, our Constitution and above all, in the right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I believe our government is supposed to serve the people, not tell them how to live. To me, this is just common sense, but since it seems to be a minority opinion, it has become "Uncommon Sense".
