Should NFL Players Be Fired?

Should NFL Players Be Fired?
There can be no doubt of my patriotism, respect for our flag, our military, our veterans, First Responders and good ol’ American apple pie. Naturally, many have assumed that I am up in arms over some NFL players, and now entire teams, choosing to take a knee rather than stand in respect of our flag... Read more »

The Cubs Win and Reality Strikes

I admit to being a lifelong Cubs fan. As a native North Sider how could I not be a Cubs fan. Like so many, I grew up going to the Friendly Confines back when Ernie Banks, Mr Cub himself coined that phrase. My mother would take my brother and I on the Addison bus, packing... Read more »

Truth in Pictures

Truth in Pictures
A patriotic story, or really any story, is made more impactful when paired with a visually arresting picture. And what could be more arresting than a young woman crying on a flag draped casket on a tarmac? The story behind the picture is a blank that gets filled in through the tear-blurred eyes of the... Memorial Day Message to Veterans from a Gold Star Mother

Memorial Day Message to Veterans from a Gold Star Mother
To all those who have honorably worn this nation’s uniform, I understand why you don’t want to be thanked or even recognized on this, your most sacred day of the year. Truly, I admire and respect when veterans say, “Don’t thank me, thank those who didn’t come home”. It is a mark of your character.... Read more »

Happy Memorial Day is a Choice

Happy Memorial Day is a Choice
Happy Memorial Day is an oxymoron. If we instead say happy Memorial day, with the emphasis on Memorial, then it makes a little more sense. For those of us whose every day is Memorial Day, the inclusion of the word, much less the thought happy, feels like a betrayal. And that is understandable but it... Read more »

PTSD, Suicide and Other Myths About Veterans

Myths exist, historically, to instruct and explain. Back when most people were illiterate, and even before the written word, myths were a society’s way of understanding things that were scary, things we in the enlightened age know to be natural phenomenon. The most important myths were those that comforted the masses, helping them to feel... Read more »

    Denise Williams

Born and bred in Chicago, now living in the wilds of far suburbia. I'm a Gold Star Mom. My views are generally politically and socially conservative, though I am far from a Party line Republican. I believe in this country, our Constitution and above all, in the right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I believe our government is supposed to serve the people, not tell them how to live. To me, this is just common sense, but since it seems to be a minority opinion, it has become "Uncommon Sense".
