The following statement was published on Facebook by Miss Ukrainian Diaspora on Sept. 3, 2014
Miss Ukrainian Diaspora, a Ukrainian-American organization based in Chicago, is deeply concerned about the announcement by Mrs. America of its decision to move its 2015 pageant to Crimea while the peninsula is occupied by Russia.
Mrs. America pageant announced Monday their plans to hold their 2015 crowning ceremony in Sevastopol, Crimea. “Mrs America goes to Russia. The Crowning of Mrs America and Mrs Russia in Sevastpool, Russia!! [sic].” reads the recent update on the pageant’s Facebook page.
Announced from the stage at Mrs. America 2014 in Tucson, Arizona, the pageant organizers believe their decision to be one of unity, not of division. “A quarter of a century ago Mrs. America was invited by the then Soviet government to take all our state winners and the same number of Russian married women to Moscow for joint Mrs. America-Mrs. Russia pageant that helped build the bridge between our countries and our people,” said the telecast, “it was a great idea then - and you know what! It is a great idea now!”
“We will put Mrs. America and Mrs. Russia pageant together. Your 51 women and our 51 women will have their contest on the world famous Black Sea resort of Sevastopol. Once again, very happy that the next Mrs. America contest will happen in my country. And I wanna wish peace to all the families, all the citizens, all the countries [sic],” continued the official announcement by the representatives from Russia.
“History will repeat itself, only bigger and better. We will take the ladies from Moscow to the Black Sea coast," they concluded, referring to the territory which was invaded and occupied by the Russian army and then illegally annexed from Ukraine.
According to the State Department, Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014 is not recognized by the U.S. government and led to placement of sanctions, nor is it recognized by the international community. A majority of United Nations member states condemned these illegal actions by Russia. American companies such as McDonalds decided to stop operating in Crimea.
“We will not accept Russia’s occupation and illegal annexation of Crimea or any part of Ukraine," President Obama made clear in his remarks in Europe.
In addition to the occupation of Crimea, the United States and NATO consider Russia to be responsible for the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine and consider Russian troops to have invaded a sovereign country in the middle of Europe.
“It’s been the pro-Russian separatists who are encouraged by Russia, financed by Russia, trained by Russia, supplied by Russia and armed by Russia. And the Russian forces that have now moved into Ukraine are not on a humanitarian or peacekeeping mission. They are Russian combat forces with Russian weapons in Russian tanks. Now, these are the facts. They are provable. They’re not subject to dispute," said President Obama in a resent address.
Russian actions against Ukraine undermine the international order, threaten free Europe and peace on the continent, abuse the principles of diplomacy and destroy the sovereign rights of nations, democracy and freedom.
“We must continue to stand united against Russia’s aggression in Ukraine," President Obama urged the international community.
Miss Ukrainian Diaspora believes that the idea of building bridges between people should be based on promoting justice, peace, democracy, and freedom in the world. We hope that the people of Russia will eventually reclaim their country from the tyranny and censorship of their government which has violated countless international laws and challenges the safety of the world community.
The twenty-million-strong Ukrainian diaspora, the governments of the United States of America, the European Union, and all democratic countries stand with Ukraine and its people as they struggle for independence, sovereignty, freedom and defending their territorial integrity and peace against Russian aggression.
Therefore, Miss Ukrainian Diaspora condemns the initiative taken by Mrs. America to hold its 2015 pageant in Crimea and meanwhile referring to Crimea as Russia – a statement which supports illegal annexation of another sovereign nation's territory.
Miss Ukrainian Diaspora urges Mrs. America to reconsider its decision, and withdraw plans to hold the Mrs. America pageant in Crimea.
