Summer's almost over in this house

The school bus just drove by, apparently making a test run.  The academic year in our school district officially begins a week from tomorrow.

Usually, I'm excited for the start of school, but this year I'm clinging to our last summer days a bit more tightly.

I'm ready for a return to routine and for the days to get a bit cooler. I'm looking forward to seeing how the teachers approach the big unit on the Civil War.  I'm not ready, though, to say goodbye to special summer time with my tween.

I'm a big believer in Gretchen Rubin's belief that in parenting "the days are long, but the years are short." That has always been true, and my tween's childhood has flown by.  I fully anticipate that the next few days around here will be long ones as she adjusts to her new braces, but it also seems like a few more blinks and she'll be visiting colleges.  I realize that's not entirely true, but it feels that way right now.

I'm not saying that I want time to stop, I'd just like to slow it down a little bit, and enjoy a few more lazy days of summer with my family.

What about you? Are you wishing the kids were around for a few more weeks, or are you ready to ship the kids back to school, like the guy in the Staples commercial gliding through the back to school supplies singing "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year"?
