A Child's Fear

All through my life I have loved telling stories.  Whether it was my active imagination as a small child or writing potential screen plays for Hollywood, I have always found telling stories a great diversion to life.

For a short time during my high school years, that diversion took the form of poetry.  As a release for the frustrations of my life, the joys and fears I felt everyday, I now have my own book sitting on my shelf called "The Gift of Words" compiled with dozens of examples of my poetry.

Most of the poetry is pretty bad, definitely no match for the great poets I so look up to.  But some pieces, a very few, have held my heart and have continued to move me all these years later.

To be perfectly honest, I sometimes look back at those pieces and relish the time when writing was so easy, to where the words just seemed to appear on the page.

I have been in a slump when it comes to writing lately.  No focus.  No direction.  So I thought I would dust of my book of poetry and offer you a glimpse at one of the poems I have loved since the day it magically came out of the pencil.

This is one that use to hang on the wall of both of my kid's nurseries as a reminder of the love we all have in our Heavenly Father.  It is something I think we all need a bit of a reminder every once in a while.

A Child's Fear

When the light begins to dim
the shadows gather 'round
Sounds fill the air
your heart begins to pound

Fear grabs hold
it's claws dig deep
A taunting laugh you hear
as you begin to sleep

The clock ticks away
time passes by
Moment by moment
you begin to cry

A familiar face
to calm your fears
A loving hand
to dry your tears

A parent's love
can light a room
And their presence
will chase the doom

Our Father's love
is a warm embrace
A timely gift
in this cruel dark place
