As the Supreme Court of the United States of America hears arguments for and against marriage equality, people around the country and around the world have shown their support with a big red equals sign as their Facebook profile picture. I’ve seen more people change their profile picture for this one ideal than any other cause.
You don’t have to be gay to support an idea that all men and women are created equal and should have equal rights.
You don’t have to be liberal to believe in a world where we as humans are allowed to love whom ever we want.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Is it so hard to believe that the pursuit of happiness would include being able to marry whom ever we so desire?
Is it so difficult to comprehend that allowing others to have the same legal rights and privileges you take for granted will in no way infringe on your rights?
How is it that those voices against equality can’t see that we are talking legal rights and not religious dogma?
Fifty years ago, very few white men in America would ever have considered a black man for President of The United States, but here we are. The movement of equal rights has a long history in this country. It has been bloody at it’s worse and contentious at it’s best. We now are at another tipping point in our history. What will the high court decide? Who knows.
But as someone who has faced my own issues with inequality, I can not sit by and not encourage you to search your soul as a human being to believe in something beyond ourselves, greater than each of us. Reach into your very being for the belief that regardless of whether you’re a man or a woman, black, white or any combination of ethnicities, gay or straight – each one of us deserves the right to a life free of discrimination, the right to liberty, the idea of freedom from the domination and being restricted by others and each one of us deserves the right to pursue happiness in a life with whom we desire.
