I've heard it all over sports talk radio this morning..."No team from Illinois made it to the Big Dance this year."
Hold your horses, fellas! NO ONE? THINK AGAIN, BOYS!! Because there's one team that has made the NCAA Tournament 16 times. They're looking for their 10th consecutive invitation to Big Dance tonight, as ESPN unveils the Women's NCAA field of 64 tonight starting at 6:00 pm.
They're even inviting YOU to the party!
I'm going to be there. Hope you will, too! Join the DePaul women's basketball team for the NCAA Women's Basketball Selection Special. Coach Doug Bruno and his team will gather at McGrath-Phillips Arena to watch the selection show on ESPN on DePaul's big screen at 6 p.m. (CT). The event is open to the public and doors open at 5 p.m.
The selection show party includes food and soda while admission is free. Parking is available for $6 next door to the Sullivan Athletic Center at the 2335 N. Sheffield parking facility. Fans that plan on attending the selection show should RSVP to Katie Ramsey at (773)325-7504 or email@example.com.
In a tumultuous season, junior Anna Martin paced DePaul (21-9, 9-7 BIG EAST) in scoring in 18 games while reaching double figures in 27 of the Blue Demons’ 30 games. The junior scored a career-high 36 points in DePaul’s win over Cincinnati. Her 36 points were the most by a BIG EAST player in league games while it was the second-best scoring output by any league player this season.
Martin leads the Blue Demons in free throw percentage (.809), 3-pointers (59), 3-point field goal percentage (.410) and minutes (32.7). She is second on the team in assists (97) and steals (50).
Martin was one of two unanimous first-team All-BIG EAST Conference performers. Fellow junior Katherine Harry was an honorable mention all-BIG EAST selection and Brittany Hrynko was a unanimous all-freshman team honoree. Deanna Ortiz earned the league’s Sportsmanship Award; marking the second consecutive season that award has gone to a DePaul student-athlete.
Martin earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career after averaging 19.0 points per game which ranks second in the league. The Kentucky native was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week once while earning a spot on the weekly honor roll in eight of the 15 weeks.
The Blue Demons are looking for their 10th consecutive NCAA tournament selection on Monday. No. 23 DePaul sits at 22-10 on the season and its RPI was ranked No. 18 in the rankings that were released by the NCAA on Mar. 5.
If chosen for the NCAA Championship, the Blue Demons will play their first and second round games at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. All session tickets are currently on sale while groups of 10 or more can purchase single session passes. Tickets for the NCAA First and Second Rounds or for any DePaul athletics events can be purchased through the DePaul ticket office by calling 773-325-SLAM.
DePaul has made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances including nine consecutive dating back to 2003. DePaul is one of 12 programs to play in each of the last eight NCAA Tournaments.
