A once in a lifetime wrestling experience heads to the Chicagoland area this week.
Cody and The Young Bucks, of the powerhouse wrestling stable known as The Bullet Club, have organized a week of nonstop wrestling entertainment that puts the eyes of the wrestling fans everywhere on the Chicagoland area.
The excitement begins on Thursday when the 4 day wrestling convention, Starrcast, takes over the Hyatt Regency in Schaumburg. The convention will essentially serve as wrestling’s answer to Comic-Con featuring live podcasts, celebrity wrestling panels, and plenty of autograph opportunities.
In addition to the typical convention offerings, Starrcast will also be offering some more unconventional fan experiences. For example, a karaoke session with longtime Bullet a Club member Marty Scrull is scheduled for Thursday. On top of that, Friday brings a roast of eminent wrestling personality Bruce Prichard along with a video game tournament hosted by former WWE NXT star Leva Bates.
The fun and games at Starrcast are all part of the build-up to one event, however. The granddaddy of them all. The most highly anticipated and star studded independent wrestling show of all time.
All In will feature wrestling stars from around the world duking it out at The Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. Stars from promotions like New Japan, Impact Wrestling, AAA, and Ring Of Honor will all be featured in massive clashes on the card.
Headlining the show, however, will be three veritable dream matches that have been the source of much excitement in the wrestling world.
First off, there’s New Japan’s IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega vs former Impact and AAA champion Pentagon Jr. in a never before seen clash of international wrestling greats. Considering the high profile of both competitors, this could very well be the only time the two face off. That makes it something of a clash to determine once and for all who is the top star on the independent wrestling scene.
Also not to be missed is the NWA World Heavyweight Championship match between Nick Aldis and Cody. The belt was recently brought back to prominence with the purchase of the NWA band by 90’s rocker and Chicago resident Billy Corgan. Corgan has been promoting the title for months through a YouTube series called Ten Pounds Of Gold. The show has primarily been following the current champion, Nick Aldis, as he defends the title around the world.
Recently, the show has begun to focus primarily on the road to Aldis’s title defense at All In. Cody, being the son of late, great NWA champion and wrestling legend Dusty Rhodes, has been eager to capture the belt which his father helped bring to prominence. That drive led to some fireworks between Aldis and Cody, as Cody struggled to get Aldis to commit to defending his belt at All In.
Cody eventually got his wish, however, and now the title will be defended in what will likely be an intense and passion-fueled match at All In.
Last, but definitely not least, we arrive at the main event of All In. Squaring off in a six-man tag team match will be Bullet Club sensations The Young Bucks teaming with New Japan Star Kota Ibushi to take on a lucha triple threat of Rey Mysterio, Rey Fenix, and Bandido.
Wrestling fans of all ages should have no trouble remembering Rey Mysterio from his memorable time as one of WWE’s biggest stars. Fenix and Bandido, Mysterio’s tag partners, are both high-flying lucha Libre stars in their own rights. Fenix is one of the top stars in AAA while Bandido has risen through the ranks of prominent promotions like Crash and PWG.
Given the reputations of the competitors in this match, it’s easy to see that this six man tag will live up to its top billing, even on a card as packed as All In.
When it’s all said and done, All In looks like it will be able to meet, or even exceed, its lofty expectation. Afterwards, with an entire day of Starrcast events still left, there’s little doubt that this will be one of the most memorable wrestling weekends of the year!
I, for one, am incredibly excited to have the opportunity to have tickets to All In this Saturday. If you missed out on tickets though, don’t despair, because you can still get in on the action!
All the events at Starrcast will be live-streamed through the Fite app. In addition, you can catch the All In show itself on Fite or through the ROH pay-per-view service. The first hour of the show will even air live on WGN America for free!
Whatever you do, buckle up Chicago fans, because we have a front-row seat to one of the best wrestling weeks of the year!
