Happy 4th of July from Oprah, Michele Bachmann and I!

The 4th of July/Independence Day is a time to reflect and bask in the fact that we live in a country that we love more than anything!

Even Oprah, The Queen of all that is sane, sent out an email today to wish everyone a Happy 4th of July!

"I know the 4th of July has turned into picnics and fireworks, and barbecue moments. But it's worthy of a pause, to think about what it really means to have Freedom.

And while we're pausing think about those who sacrifice to make it so.

Wishing you all a Peaceful and Happy 4th of July."

Michele Bachmann, also, sent out a video to her followers, reflecting on the 4th!

And now, your Young Republican sends you a greeting on the 4th:

As I write this blog, I am sitting in my own room, basking in the sunlight. Sitting here in the sun is almost exactly the feeling I get when I think about American: A warm, safe feeling of serene calm.

People complain about American and her flaws, but where else can we live in a country that respects us as an individual and lets us flourish in society?

Americans truly do love one another. Sure, there are many many bad seeds in the bunch, but as a whole we are a simple, happy people who just enjoy being in The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave!

We are a people who have lived through many good times and many bum times, to quote Stephen Sondheim, but we're still here! We live through the disease and famine and poverty and live another day knowing that we are blessed to live in a country that we love!

As a Republican, people often see me as a gun-toting patriotic nut, which I'm not. But I AM Patriotic to the extreme. I love my country above all else, above anything. We have to love our country, because we have received so much from it!

If we all stop complaining and simply sit and think about America, we will see that there really is nowhere else in the entire universe that we would rather be!

Even Gertrude Stein, a Parisian at heart, said "America is my country and Paris is my hometown."

We have to love America, despite its flaws and shortcomings, because that is what we were born and bred to do!

  • July 4th, 1776, was the day 13 british colonies stood up to the british empire and declared themselves independent. But by then, we were Americans already, no longer british subjects. You see, April 19, 1775 was the day we became Americans. So what was in place in the colonies that enabled them to stand up to tyranny and say "no more!"? The militia. The militia pre-dates the declaration of independence and of course, the constitution. It was the militias of the colonies that made what we have today possible. The right to form a militia is contained within our constitution and was viewed by our founding fathers as an essential component of what would be necessary for the continuation of our liberties. Today, we need militias as much as they were needed in those historic times. They are the only truely effective way to stop tyranny. They are not the Army, not the National Guard. They are citizens who bear the burden of liberty with their own arms and equipment that they themselves are responsible for purchasing or making. They are responsible for their own training and can be called up to serve alongside the Army if the president orders it. Please, read your constitution and read the book, "Paul Revere's Ride". Remember the words of Thomas Jefferson "From time to time, the tree of liberty needs to be watered with the blood of tryannts and patroits."
