THE STYLE DIAL - Turning Your Personal Style Up A Notch

Style, as defined in the world of interior design, is a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed and placed into an interior element. Whether eclectic “Goodwill chic” or polished contemporary, it all boils down to our own individual comfort level of what motivates and inspires us, rather than a particular designer name or where a certain item was purchased. The trick to creating an interior in which you will feel happy and comfortable is to recognize that comfort level and your true motivation and inspiration, rather than surrounding yourself with what you think is “appropriate.”

Individual style derives from our own unique personality, which has been shaped through our childhood, our peers, our generation and – most importantly – the powerful influence of the media. Regardless of nature versus nurture, if you are considering turning up your own personal style, you should read the four major points below to find out how to tune into your instincts and transform your interiors from a 2 into a 10 on the style dial.

Fashion as It Relates to Interior Design – Take heed of what colors and textures you put on your body. Do you like your attire tailored, bold-hued and sleek, or do you prefer more relaxed, muted and loose-fitting garments? The clothes that you choose to wear say a lot about what makes you feel comfortable in your surroundings. Although there is no rule without exception, those who don form-fitting, statement-making clothing will most likely prefer a streamlined and modern interior style, whereas those who prefer a low-key, casual style of dress will usually be attracted to interiors that appear more traditional and lived-in.

Vintage vs. Up-to-the-Minute – Do you enjoy the rush of a bargain or the thrill of the hunt? If you do, you may be one who prefers an eclectic interior combining vintage items in a one-of-a-kind, mixed-and-matched style. Or do you like to shop online, from catalogs or from retail establishments that set the trends for the latest and greatest in design? Maybe your style includes a little of both? Just remember, when it comes to expressing yourself through interior design, there is no “right or wrong,” and the choices are endless.

Wood vs. Metal – Do you find that you are more comfortable surrounded by interiors that incorporate various kinds of wood, or do you like objects made of metal and glass? Many people who were raised in more rural areas of the Midwest tend to prefer the organic nature of wood in their personal environments, whereas those reared in larger metropolitan areas appreciate metals in finishes of rust, chrome or metallic as well as clear or frosted glass. No need to fret over one or the other, as much of today’s style marries all of these materials beautifully.

Minimalist vs. Maximalist - Do you prefer interiors that are void of excessive furniture, accessories and artwork and only have the fundamental requirements in place? If so, you could be referred to as a minimalist on the style dial. On the other hand, if you like your interior environment to be adorned from wall to ceiling with very few empty places, you may well be what is commonly considered a maximalist on the style dial. If you do not find yourself to be one or the other above, than your personal style is one of the hundreds located between.

Finding one’s own design style can be a lifelong journey for some and very simple for others, depending on the time and attention you put into it – like everything else in life. Some have the ability to tap into their inner self to find their own style, while others require the assistance of a professional interior designer.
