Because of the change in political climate, certain laws, and the influx of images from pop culture, many dormant feelings of hate have surfaced in both social media and daily life. I tell my friends all the time that the ever since Obama has been elected, racism is much more prevalent. People actually roll their eyes, and I find myself praying for patience daily. Oh the joys of being Black.
Nevertheless, no one is asking you to change your political views, religious stance or opinions because trust me, I have interesting views of my own. However, extreme negative views towards any particular group is unhealthy. Because of freedom of speech and free choice that is derived simply from being a human being in America, many are becoming fearful of their future. Since hate and anger are a primarily a byproduct of fear, let me give you five reasons why you need to relax; not for others but for yourself.
1. You will live longer.
Though we all know people that live well into their 80s and 90s despite their hateful views, nowadays, with the issues around health care and environment, it behooves you to attempt to remove any barriers of stress.
Remember the person that you just didn't like when you were a kid; somehow they always managed to sit next to you, or find you on the playground. As adults we often find ourselves in the most uncomfortable situations based on our thoughts and fears. Just like the law of attraction states, you encounter find those things that you hate the most in your daily life. Be careful that you don't allow your fears and hateful thoughts to place you in a challenging position. The person that you "hate" the most may actually be there to help you in a dangerous situation.
3. You will look better.
According to The Mind-Beauty Connection: 9 Days to Less Stress, Gorgeous Skin, and a Whole New You by Amy Wechsler, Cortisol (the stress hormone) degrades collagen. When you consider what exactly a wrinkle is -- a weakening and lessening of collagen fibers in the skin’s dermis -- it’s easy to understand how stress, then, can directly cause wrinkles. Basically, feeding thoughts of negativity causes stress, which then leads to more wrinkles. There is nothing worse than an unattractive bigot.
Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:2 (NIV)
