How I met Mayor Emanuel

Disclaimer: The coolest thing about being a transplant (someone that is not affiliated with a particular place)  and moving to a new place (Chicago feels new since I have been away for nearly a decade) is that you have little understanding of the climate, political or physical. You are able to look at things with a fresh set of eyes and take each experience as it comes.

Needless to say, I had the coolest run in with the Mayor of Chicago two weeks ago. As I alluded to in my previous post about my awesome muffin from Magnolia’s Bakery, I have been meaning to write about that  Wednesday approximately two weeks ago that I saw the Mayor. I was traveling  North on Michigan with my bf enjoying a casual stroll.  As we approached Mayor Rahm Emanuel with his two person security personnel I whispered to my boyfriend, “Is that the mayor?”  Though the Mayor was chatting on his phone, we asked if we could have a picture. In hindsight I realize that it was a bit rude to request a picture while he was on the phone, but he politely put up one finger asking us to wait. In less than thirty seconds he reemerged, and said hello.  His security team offered to take the pic, using my boyfriend’s Android phone. Then he asked our names and what we did for a living.

We engaged in a brief conversation about our backgrounds and I told him I lived in Printer’s Row (of course) and I also said that I went to Yale for grad school, since I remembered that at some point he spent time in on the east coast. When I mentioned the Connecticut connection he gave me a fist bump, also known as a pound. It was kinda cool, and we walked away smiling at our random run in on North Michigan. Again, the cool thing about being a transplant, is that even if I was in a small town in Wyoming and had met the mayor of that town it would have been as equally exciting and random:)

Out there things can happen
and frequently do
to people as brainy
and footsy as you.

And when things start to happen,
don't worry. Don't stew.
Just go right along.
You'll start happening too.
