Yesterday I went to the dermatologist for the first time since I was quite young. I was very nervous as I have a bit of white coat syndrome and was afraid she was going to tell me my skin looks terrible and chastise me for not taking care of it.
Well what do y'know, the first thing she says when she comes in is, "You're a redhead. Have you always been a redhead?" Then she proceeded to tell me why it's extra important that I use sun umbrellas, wear full-cover clothing, and use SPF at all times and basically live in a cave. She explained that because I'm a redhead, I'm at a much higher risk for melanoma than most.
But what I think was surprising to her was that I knew all that already. I think she was impressed when I said I use 50 SPF every day and knew to apply it to my neck and other exposed skin besides my face.
I suppose there are some perks of being a ginger after all -- we've known pretty much since birth not to take skin protection lightly! And honestly, I was really impressed the dermatologist knew all about our race's unique health concerns!
