"Thriller-LIVE" (Lyric Theatre in London): Dazzling, Crotch-grabbing, Spectacle Rewind!

#53.  Flying Music, in association with Adrian Grant, present THRILLER - LIVE, a tribute to the career accomplishments of the late Michael Jackson.  From his early days in the kid crushing Jackson Five to his moon-walking triumphant to his more contemplative final career phase, THRILLER-LIVE showcases forty years in music.  The “Man in the Mirror” knew how to entertain with his song and dance.  THRILLER-LIVE is a dazzling, crotch-grabbing, spectacle rewind.

The 1980’s come back in a dynamic rush.  One glove.  Red leather jacket.  Fedora.  It’s Michael Jackson encrusted in sequins!  MJ is played by several different singers, including a woman and a young boy.  The singing is outstanding.  The rapid-paced show flows from one song to another with a Jacko lead and back-up singers and dancers.  I’m constantly amazed by the men in the ensemble.  They are not small guys but they are moving like agile "PYTs".  Breakdancing, backflipping, blasting with non-stop movement.  The synchronicity is impressive.  The whole show is MTV live without commercial interruptions.  And just as the curtain falls and I imagine this talented ensemble must be exhausted, I realize we haven’t heard “Thriller” yet.  So, out they come for a multiple song encore.

Michael Jackson was a phenomenal, award-winning entertainer.  He continued to evolve in his quest for relevancy.   Since 2006, THRILLER-LIVE has been playing to sold-out crowds in the West End and on a world tour. It is the perfect memorial to Michael Jackson’s contribution to the music industry.  For some, especially Americans, his accomplishments became tainted by personal scandal.  THRILLER-LIVE helps us remember what we loved about Michael Jackson when his being “Bad” was fantastic!

An American in London, Abby Rose describes it with ‘less than satisfactory.’
