When I feel down in the dumps, I don't pray, or talk to a therapist, or share my feelings with my neighbor's dog like Laura Linney in "The Big C." For the feel-goods, I get in my car, drive northeast to Bleeding Heart Bakery ( http://www.thebleedingheartbakery.com/) and I buy a red velvet cupcake.
Yes, I know I shouldn't eat to comfort myself, blah blah, but I swear they put some sort of magical elixir in those cupcakes that instantly lifts me to a higher spiritual plane. Some people drink their sorrows. Me? I like to satisfy my inner-Epicurean with red velvet perfection. What makes Bleeding Heart Bakery the best place to indulge my sweet tooth? All of their ingredients are local, sustainable, organic (translation=a whole lot better than Betty Crocker!). Also, the kitschy, punktastic decor will pull you in and make you want to dye your pink to match the dollops of frosting that melt in your mouth.
Back in July, Bleeding Heart Bakery had a cupcake-eating contest and, I was thisclose to canceling my trip to Dublin, Ireland so that I could participate (and no doubt win!). But, my tickets were nonrefundable, so I will have to wait till next summer to flaunt my competitive eating skills.
Here's the thing: I have never actually entered a formal competitive eating contest, but I have excelled in non-IFOCE sponsored competitions. My food rival is my older brother; he is Apollo Creed to my Rocky. We have waged marshmallow contests twice in the past 6 months. He won the first time (beginner's luck for sure). I was the victor of our second competition.
You may find it a bit of a contradiction that as a Former-Chubette I am a novice competitive eater, but, I am a devout follower of the maxim, "Everything in Moderation." Yes, I will eat a cupcake, or 2, or 12, if the occasion calls for it (I will be the cupcake queen of 2011!!) , but I will not excessively eat like that every day.
Julia Child said it best-" Life itself is the proper binge." So, go forth to Bleeding Heart Bakery, my fellow Former-Chubettes, just don't go every day!
