It's 4th of July weekend and I am officially on vacation in 2 hours. I have planned a road trip with my husband and little sister to Rapid City,South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore (PLEASE let me meet Team America:World Police!).
Memories of road trips past have been swimming in my head all afternoon as I have become a puff of nostalgia.
The summer of 1993 was THE road trip of road trips for the Tichenor family. My Dad had just bought a used RV for our vacation. For the record, it was the first and ONLY family roadtrip as the RV retired to our front yard for the next 7 years. (We're from the South- it was a requirement to have an unused vehicle in our yard!)
The road was going to take us from our home in sleepy Slidell, Lousiana to Atlanta, Georgia. Before we set out for our family adventure, my mother took us to Winn-Dixie and let us each pick out one snack of our choice for the nearly 12 hour drive.
It was one of the most difficult choices of my life. I could not believe my cruel mother was making us choose just one treat. I was a Chubette! Choosing one snack was tortuous as every piece of candy called me, begging me to eat it!
After much consideration, I chose a small box of Butterfinger Minis. The marriage of chocolate and peanut butter cannot be beat!
30 minutes in to our trip, I had already gotten into a fight with my younger brother, who had a horrible habit of not following my orders. 1 hour in to the trip, I opened my only box of snacks. 3 minutes later, they were gone. I spent the remaining 11 hour brooding and reading Baby Sitter's Club books, kicking myself for not rationing out my Butterfingers.
17 years later, I will not make the same mistake. I have packed plenty of snacks lest I run out 1 hour in to the trip, and this time, they are healthy. I chose candies like Boston Baked Beans (beans are protein!) .Dark Chocolate Raisinets (raisins are fruit!), and Swedish Fish (packed with Omega 3 fatty acids, for sure).
Snacks secure in my cooler, I am off to South Dakota! Have a Happy 4th of July, FCCers!
