"Black Is Beautiful" Beer Review: Solemn Oath with Coffee

Thumbnail image for '"Black Is Beautiful" Beer Review: Solemn Oath with Coffee'
This is a shorter review in the Black Is Beautiful collaboration series. I’ve been going through local releases in this series of over 1,200 brewers worldwide, intended to raise funds and awareness for Black causes and social justice. I learned Solemn Oath Brewery in Naperville had their version of the Imperial Stout available last Saturday.... Read more »

Local Beer Review: Solemn Oath End All IPA

Local Beer Review: Solemn Oath End All IPA
I’ve caught a bit of a breather from the flood of calendar activities, with the new year. So I’m clearing some loose ends, finishing some article drafts, and wrapping up my stash local beers that I’ve bought for reviewing. Which means it’s time to go snag some more bottles and cans. Solemn Oath Brewery of... Read more »

Chicago Black Wednesday/Thanksgiving Beer Events
All right. Every time I think I have gathered all the Black Wednesday and Black Friday events, still more pop up. The only thing to do now is to post this article early. And take a look: if you can't get in, or don't care to get in on some Bourbon County Stout releases, there  are a kegful of other beers pouring around Chicago! Robot fights? We got 'em...

Chicago Craft Beer Oktoberfest Weekend, September 14-16

Chicago Craft Beer Oktoberfest Weekend, September 14-16
So now that we're into weekend-long Oktoberfests, I still need to work out how to present events that take up two or three days. Have a full summary the first day and have the following days' listings refer back to it? Just show the event once and note that it runs over more than one day? Well, I'm working this out...

Local Beer Review: Solemn Oath/Night Shift Hosies

Local Beer Review: Solemn Oath/Night Shift Hosies
Next week I’m taking the ‘Naut kids to see Grandma and Grandpa in Iowa, and catch up on some uncles that they still haven’t met. Maybe we’ll hit more post-worthy pubs there. Just in case, I’m packing some beers all brewed and canned no further than the next town over. And let’s get to another local... Read more »

Ale from the Cellar: Solemn Oath Kavorka

Ale from the Cellar: Solemn Oath Kavorka
This was a beer I picked up as soon as I spotted in at my local Costco back three years ago with the idea of doing it as a beer for Valentine’s Day. Because of its name, “Kavorka.” You know, that quality Kramer had in “Seinfeld” that made him irresistible to women. Seemed appropriate. But... Read more »

Chicago Craft Beer Events, November 13-16

Chicago Craft Beer Events, November 13-16
We are now into the season of big beer releases: this week it's Perennial Abraxas. And with Black Wednesday and Black Friday loading with events, I've posted previews for those days, which you can find on this blog homepage, or on this page's "right rail." News: Timothy Marshall, founding brewmaster at Solemn Oath Brewery, has departed for warmer climes. This announcement was posted to Solemn Oath's Facebook page:
Since before we opened our doors head brewer Tim Marshall has been at the helm of SOB's beer operations. He has dedicated the last six years towards developing the beers you've grown to love, driving our growth, and serving as a leader at SOB. Next week will be Tim's final with the brewery as he and his family move to Florida for their next adventure. We are grateful to have had the chance to work alongside Tim and proud of everything we have accomplished together. Cheers to Tim, our friend and forever a co-founder of Solemn Oath. You will be missed.
I first knew Tim as head brewer at Rock Bottom Yorktown (Lombard), well before he set out to start his own brewery, which opened in 2012. His penchant for left-of-center brews was in evidence back then (and never would have set well with RB's current corporate brewing policy). Good luck, Tim!

Chicago Craft Beer Events, May 2-5

Chicago Craft Beer Events, May 2-5
If I look a little thin on Cinco de Mayo events, it’s because I tried to filter in the ones that would include good beer. There will be 5 spots on every block offering buckets of Corona and margaritas. Monday, May 2 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm ♦ Atlas Irish Wake Atlas Brewing Company‘s Seven... Read more »
