This past week, San Diego-based Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits has announced plans to open a "research and development" brewpub on North Green Street, in the Fulton Market neighborhood. The brewpub, set to open next year, is a kind of homecoming for Ballast Point, which was purchased by Chicago-based Constellation Brands for $1 billion in 2015. (Chicago Tribune) Also, Shorts Brewing of northern Michigan has announced that they have sold a 19.99% equity stake in their craft beer operation to Lagunitas U.S. Holdings (yes, it spells LUSH). Under the terms of the deal, Lagunitas will receive a seat on Shorts' five-person board of directors. The deal was described as a way to fund further expension for the popular beermaker. Last weekend the  32nd Annual Great American Beer Festival was staged by the Brewers Association at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. The Chicago region was once again well represented at the 2012 Great American beer Festival, held this week at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. Area brewers swept all three medals in the highly contested American Pale Ale category, and homebrewer Scott Pointon took a silver in the ProAm competition.
