Beer Preview: Founders 4 Giants IIPA

I’m working at home now, sitting by the computer and waiting for clients to send things to do. But last week, I did get a new beer sent to me for my comment by Founders Brewing Co. of Grand Rapids, MI. I set up in my beer bunker, or rather cellar, and tried their 4... Read more »

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, November 1-3

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, November 1-3
Update, October 31: Less than 12 hours after posting this story, we have word that Founders and Evans have reached a settlement in Evans' discrimination lawsuit. Josh Noel lays out the details. As usually happens in a civil suit, details of the settlement aren't disclosed.
I had so far not had much new to add to the controversy surrounding Founders Brewing. Rather, I posted the ongoing story in my Facebook page. But now the issue has come to local establishments choosing to stop carrying their beers. Roots Pizza, part of the Fifty/50 restaurant group, has now re-positioned a Kentucky Breakfast Stout and Canadian Breakfast Stout keg event to a fundraiser for a local charity. The case started last year when Tracy Evans, a former manager at Founders' Detroit tap room, sued the company for racial discrimination. Like most civil cases, this might have dragged on a year or two, leading to a settlement sealed by a non-disclosure agreement. But last week, Detroit's Metro Times published an excerpt from Founders' Detroit general manager Dominic Ryan's deposition, in which he claimed he "didn't know" Evans was black. With Michael Scott-like cluelessness, he went to claim he didn't know whether Barack Obama, Michael Jordan, or former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick were African-American, because he has “never met them.” This has led to fallout in the form of Founders accounts dropping the brand. Graci Harkema, hired in January as Founders’ diversity and inclusion director in an effort to address the lawsuit, quit and then posted her letter of resignation on Facebook, as reported by Josh Noel. We have already seen videos of people pouring their KBS bottles out on the ground (well, they've already got your money; just drink it). And the Detroit taproom has been closed "indefinitely." On a more positive note, we have events building up to next weekend's Festival of Barrel Aged Beer. And the opening of Pollyanna's latest taproom in St. Charles...

Chicago Craft Beer Events, August 6 - 9

Chicago Craft Beer Events, August 6 - 9
There's a new dust-up in the regional beer scene. Toppling Goliath, the fan-favorite brewery in Decorah, IA, has sued its former head brewer, Chris Flenker. Flenker had worked for TG until January 2017, under terms of a noncompete contract that said he couldn't work for another brewery within 150 miles of Decorah for two years. But Flenker has been named head brewer of Thew Brewing Co., a startup brewer in nearby Cedar Rapids. The story appears in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Meantime, people commenting on the case have been finding themselves blocked from TG's Twitter feeds and other social media. Meantime, we have these events, leading to the weekend with Great taste of the Midwest, and the Lagunitas Beer Circus...

Chicago Beer Events, April 2-5

Chicago Beer Events, April 2-5
So the improbable run of the Ramblers came to an end on Saturday against Michigan. And apparently Goose Island had one of those bets with Founders Brewing, in which supporters of the winning team will take over the Twitter feed of the other brewer on April 4. And there'll an announcement that day, likely of some type of collaboration. Meantime, as I write this article on Saturday evening, both the Sox and Cubs are leading their divisions...

I Finally Got Founders' Canadian Breakfast Stout

I Finally Got Founders' Canadian Breakfast Stout
As you know, the holy grail of beer for the past month had been Canadian Breakfast Stout. This beer is an imperial version of Founders Brewing Co’s Breakfast Stout, the same base beer as for their Kentucky Breakfast Stout, but aged in bourbon barrels that had originally held maple syrup. Got it? I’m guessing those... Read more »

Craft Beer Preview: Founders Doom

I cut another entry in my video blog playlist: “One-Take Beer Review.” I’m finding the videos get a few more viewers when I feature “whales” from widely distributed brewers, so here’s one on Founders Brewing Company’s Doom. Disclosure: this beer was sent to me by Founders for comment. Doom is part of Founders’ “Backstage” series,... Read more »

Craft Beer Preview: Founders Sumatra Mountain Brown

Craft Beer Preview: Founders Sumatra Mountain Brown
Temps in the 90s, scattered storms through the area. And I have to start my weekend events listing… tomorrow. So I have time to pop another beer that has been sent to me, this time by Founders Brewing Co. Sumatra Mountain Brown is an imperial brown ale made with Sumatra coffee. Founders’ info sheet says... Beer by the Grill: Founders PC Pils
You regular readers of my blipverts will know that it’s been an “interesting” week. I’m working to fill daily articles with interesting stuff the Chicago Craft Beer Week, in the middle of having a bit of “day surgery” that still requires the rest of the week for recuperation. But I am, in fact, feeling pretty... Read more »

Beeronaut is Back: Pre CCBW Calendar, May 13-15

Beeronaut is Back: Pre CCBW Calendar, May 13-15
Yes, I finally finished my long overdue Ruby on Rails assignment for my class from last fall. I could have celebrated by going to American Beer Classic Saturday, but I need to work on that "moderation" thingie. But if anyone who attended wants to comment below, welcome! Instead, I had an invite from fellow ChicagoNow blogger and CN trivia teammate Exavier Pope to the opening of his new law office, which he shares with his lovely wife's art gallery at the Lacuna Artist Loft Studios on Canalport at Cermak. I got to feel so urbane; visiting another cool converted loft space (the former Chicago Macaroni Co., no less), talking to models and a WGCI DJ, advising a few other guests on craft beer… And three floors down was another gallery event with the guys from Powell Brew House sampling more of their high-grade homebrew...

Beeronaut Craft Beer Events, April 1-4
I mentioned Kentucky Breakfast Stout a few times last week. Now it's starting to pour at more places in our town. First, a few of those group craft beer events:

Game of Thrones Iron Throne Beer events

There are still debut events for Brewery Ommegang's limited release of Iron Throne Belgian style, tied in to the HBO series Game of Thrones. "This blonde ale is brewed for the evil House Lannister with a hoppy bite on the finish...
