Chicago Craft Beer Events, November 10–13
The Festival of (Wood and) Barrel-Aged Beer hits town this weekend, probably the biggest craft beer event in Chicago. Wish I had tickets, but I don’t. Wish I could give away tickets, but I can’t. But here are some pre-FoBAB events you can enjoy, with less parking hassle. Monday, November 10 6:00 – 8:00 pm... Read more »

Chicago Craft Beer Events, August 25—28

Chicago Craft Beer Events, August 25—28
It’s pretty definite that after Labor Day, I will need to take a little hiatus from this column. The main reason being that I have an idea for a book about craft beer culture, I have an acquisitions editor who’s been waiting to see my proposal since April, and I have no time to do... Read more »

Peace in the Valley Again: Goose Island Brewpub Renews Lease
After reports back in June that the original Goose island brewpub on N. Clybourn Ave. might lose its lease, it now seems that GI and its landlord have struck a new deal. An article posted Monday in Crain’s Chicago Real Estate Daily  says CRM Properties Group Ltd. has reached an agreement on a new 10-year lease for... Read more »

As of this writing, I have only the two DESTIHL events I teased in my last article. Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, August 16-18
I got lots of response and retweetings to my article about DESTIHL debuting in Chicago. I said I’d have news of where they are debuting and I do have some events here. What with festivals this weekend and a busy week ahead, I’m back to the two-a-week format so I can run more DESTIHL events... Read more »

Local Beer Makers at the FoBAB Documentary Party

Local Beer Makers at the FoBAB Documentary Party
I was having so much fun sampling at talking beer last Saturday, that it's only now that I realized I had been to my first film premiere. A fourth floor loft studio on North Racine was packed full for the debut of "FOBAB," a documentary shot at Chicago's tenth annual Festival of Barrel Aged Beer. It was a short film, to be sure, and the producers did not discuss what would happen to it next, but the crowd was very appreciative, cheering on-screen appearances of John Laffler (ex-of Goose Island's Barrel program, now a partner in the forthcoming Off Color Brewing), Randy Mosher (5 Rabbit) and Pete Crowley (Haymarket Pub & Brewing), among the many "Kahunae" of barrel-aged beers...

Winning Brews at Chicago's Festival of Barrel-Aged Beers

Winning Brews at Chicago's Festival of Barrel-Aged Beers

As with previous locations, long lines waited for the start of both the afternoon and evening session, for the chance to sample 173 beers from 60 breweries. Each beer was unique, but all shared one characteristic: they were aged in barrels, some reused liquor or wine barrels, some in new toasty oak or other woods...
