Finding a Beer for the End of the World: 12-21-2012, Pt. 2: Beers

Finding a Beer for the End of the World: 12-21-2012, Pt. 2: Beers
Truth to tell, if I actually did think the world was coming to an end, I would spend the time making sweet… um, chocolate chip cookies with my family. Yeah, that’s it. Only if they were not nearby would I go to my beer cellar and start drinking all the vintage ales I’ve been saving. But in fact, the imaginary apocalypse is really just another reason to party. I’m all for that. So the appropriate beers to drink can be chosen with the same consideration as a picture of Santa on the label of a Christmas beer. In this article, I listed some appropriate places to hunker down with one last, great beer. Now here are some beers to try at home. First, consider that culture that was able to layout a pretty accurate calendar 5,000 years ago, while we “civilized” nations still argue over when Easter should be. Like many Mesoamericans, the Mayans brewed with local maize, flavored with cocoa, honey, chile peppers, and whatever other tasty plants were at hand. Some beers nearby with that same influence: 5 Rabbit Ki’ Chun: this is a new beer by Chicago’s Latin-influenced 5 Rabbit Cerveceria. It’s name means “tasty start” according to founding brewmaster Randy Mosher, who writes, “Ki’ Chun blends the apricot perfume of chanterelles with three malts and toasted oats, all tied together by the exotic fruitiness of New Zealand Rakau hops, accented by a Belgian yeast strain. Dark Thai palm sugar lightens the body a bit and makes this 9.5 % alc/vol beer dangerously drinkable, dry and creamy.” Ki’ Chun con Chanterelles will be tapped on December 21, the first day of the new calendar cycle. These locations will be pouring: I had one of Randy’s mushroom beers way back in 2002, and found it delicious. He’s had all this time to tweak the recipe since then...

Halloween 2012 Chicago craft beer calendar

Halloween 2012 Chicago craft beer calendar
As promised, I am bringing in some calendar highlights for the week of Halloween. It’s been a while since I’ve done my “rounds” of building the calendar, while I work on my job search and classwork, but the task just gets so much longer. Thanks to all the new brewers and increasing number of craft... Read more »

American Craft Beer Week highlights for May 15-16

Time for me to attempt to chronicle the overwhelming schedule of events that is Chicago Craft Beer Week 2012. This year's special event in held in conjunction with American Craft Beer Week, coordinated by the Brewers Association and running May 14-20. The Chicago edition runs May 17 - 27, coordinated by the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild. That's right, there are beer events for two whole weeks. After the glitches caused by last year's passport & stamps program, where bars paid a premium to participate and servers weren't apprised of their establishment's specials, this year any place serving beer can be put on the CCBW schedule. The customer's incentive program has been simplified: Pick up a lanyard and a neighborhood map at any of the locations on this list. You'll get a sticker for each venue where you buy something to create your own keepsake. Those who collect two stickers from each of ten Chicago neighborhood (all of the suburbs are commingled into a "Greater Suburban" neighborhood, and you'll get VIP treatment at Revolution Brewing's opening party for its new Kedzie St. Brewhouse May 25 (though you still must buy a ticket to the event to get in). With so many events going on, many of which are ticketed and thus sold out, I can best try to present highlights for each day of CBBW. These highlights will mainly focus on:
  1. New Chicago brewers introducing their product
  2. Cheap Beer
  3. Brewers debuting in the Chicago market
  4. Free Beer
  5. One-of-a-kind collaborations and rare beer tappings. This time around, Kentucky Breakfast Stout barely gets a nod.
  6. Did I mention, Free Beer
Before I get carried away with myself, Free Beer usually means a "tasting," where you can score a couple 2 oz. samples. "Tappings" mean a keg or firkin of beer is tapped at the scheduled time. Tasters may be passed around. As an admitted RateBeer "ticker," I know that getting several samples of new-to-you beer can be just as much fun as entire pints. Be it known that you can see a full schedule of CCBW events of their web site. My regular calendar, now at ChiTownOnTap, also lists non-affiliated events. In the interest of a good night's sleep those, I didn't include CCBW events that are just dinner specials at some restaurants with a nice beer list...

Mardi Gras and other Beeronaut highlights: February 20 to 23

I’ve pared down the list a little bit, just to highlight Mardi Gras celebrations that involve a deal on craft beers. But be sure to check in, and make reservations with, your own favorite bistro.
