Baderbräu Releases Red Velvet Bock

Baderbräu Releases Red Velvet Bock
I am passing along this news release since it was sent to me, after all. And it talks up a new beer that’s on shelves; if not now, then soon. Baderbräu, the craft beer that was popular in Chicago in the late 80’s and 90’s and recently returned to the market, announces today that it... Read more »

Shortly after re-launching his revived Baderbräu beer brand, Robert Sama has added an Oktoberfest alongside the original Baderbräu Pilsener. Like the Pilsener, Baderbräu Oktoberfest is contract brewed at Stevens Point Brewery in Wisconsin. Rob dropped off a sixpack for me downtown at work Tuesday afternoon. Parked in a 5-minute zone, he quickly explained that the Oktoberfest was... Read more »

Brewpub Openings: I can’t kid myself I’ll be able to squeeze these out as separate articles, so let me let you know: Chain O’Lakes Brewing Company, which first announced plans to open in 2010, has held a soft opening last weekend, offering tours of their new facility, and beers from other nearby brewers. Their own... Read more »

Baderbräu Returns - Again

Baderbräu Returns - Again
Last July this column marked the return of Baderbräu, the beer which, along with Goose island and the Weinkeller, launched the Chicago craft beer scene in 1988. The following year it became the first Chicago craft beer to be bottled for retail. Robert Sama, a fan of the Czech-style Pilsener, bought the brand when he... Read more »

Baderbrau returns! Talking to the new owner of Baderbrau Brewing Co.

Baderbrau returns! Talking to the new owner of Baderbrau Brewing Co.
The year 1988 marked the true beginning of the craft beer movement in Chicago. That's when the Goose Island Brewpub opened in a former Turtle Wax factory, the Weinkeller in Berwyn began making its own beer. The Tap and Growler (now Jak's Tap) and Sieben's Bierstube (no relation to Chicago's original brewing Sieben family, as I'll be reminded) had opened the year before. Baderbräu n a bottleAnd Baderbräu came out on draft, later becoming the first new bottled Chicago beer in stores since the Peter Hand (Meister Brau) brewery closed in 1977. Baderbräu was made in Elmhurst by the Pavichevich Brewing Co. until its foreclosure in 1997 (nothing changes, does it). The brand languished in limbo until being bought Robert Sama, co-founder of the new Baderbrau Brewing Co. After extensive research and no doubt tasty experimentation, Sama and his partners have brought Baderbräu Chicago Pilsener back, both on tap, and in bottles at the Binny's Beverage Depot chain...

Chicago Craft Beer Week highlights, Thursday May 23

Chicago Craft Beer Week highlights, Thursday May 23
Remember my watchword: "Tastings" usually involve free samples of beer. Oh, and have I mentioned that Baderbräu is back? See the rest at my ChiTownonTap Calendar or at Chicago Craft Beer Week's schedule. 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Baderbräu Returns! Launch Party Binnys South Loop, 1132 S Jefferson St, Chicago On the 10-year anniversary of its disappearance, Baderbräu Chicago Pilsener, Chicago’s landmark “first craft beer,” returns with its original recipe in time for CCBW. The team responsible for Baderbräu’s return, Baderbrau Brewing Company, has spent a two-year journey tracking down the original master brewer Douglas Babcock, rediscovering the original recipe and proprietary yeast strain, and working with brewing partner Argus Brewery to perfect the flavor–all to save this historic Chicago beer from being lost. Be there to experience the return of this landmark Chicago Pilsener at one of the four launch parties this week. Upcoming: Stocks & Blondes, and Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar, Friday. And Hackney’s Printers Row on Saturday...
