Starting in July, we will see the first releases from one of the largest brewers’ collaborations in the country. The Black is Beautiful initiative was started by Weathered Souls Brewing of San Antonio, TX. The idea was hatched shortly after the George Floyd murder as a way to make positive contributions to each brewer’s local... Read more »
More of the Black is Beautiful
collaborations have been coming out this week. We have some of the weekend releases here.
During the week, we saw More Brewing forced to cancel a 3rd anniversary event and close both locations because an employee had been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 exposure. They have been scrubbing down and hope to re-open soon. But we do see danger signs that Phase 4 of the reopening plan may have to backslide as cases start to increase. I just hope everyone in our community has been excercising good sense...
I just got news about a brief promotion that perhaps you’d be interested in. It’s got limitations: It’s a delivery promotion available only in nine Chicago ZIP Codes: 60622, 60661, 60610, 60614, 60647, 60651, 60612, 60642, or 60618. New Belgium Brewing is releasing the latest in its rotating Voodoo Ranger IPA releases. 1985 IPA hit... Read more »
As you might have figured, the Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison, WI, will not be taking place this August. The event's organizers, the Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild,
will be hosting a "Backyard Taste," to make up some of the funds being raised for their local charity beneficiaries. They are taking pre-orders for a Steelys
stainless steel pint cup at $20 each. The fundraiser will go forward if 1,000 pre-orders are received. The process will also involve local site pickups to be determined. Pre-order at this link.
Regrettably, some of the beer establishments that have re-opened under Phase IV of the "Reopen Illinois" plan have had to close, albeit temporarily, when one of their employees tested positive for exposure to COVID-19. This has happened on Saturday at the Werk Force Brewing tap room and Chicago Brew Werks in Plainfield. The employee had last worked there on July 5, and reported feeling ill afterward. Werk Force is closed while the rest of their employees get tested, and will reopen when they can. Sovereign in Plainfield is facing a similar situation...
We have a few more locations that have finally been able to reopen for serving beer! And another sneak peek of Downers Grove's Goldfinger Brewing.
I have been seeing some Facebook posts from establishments who are getting scammed by food delivery services like UberEats or Grubhub. They are apparently posting menus from places that are not
their clients, marking up prices, and sending their drivers out to pick up orders. Often, the drivers never deliver, leaving the restaurant to deal with angry customers. The best way to avoid this issue is to contact the brewer or restaurant directly, to use pickup or their own delivery, or find out which service they are using, if any...
Thought I would finally get my series on local breweries started during the pandemic, but so many other minor things kept popping up. Here’s the one I started in May, when establishments were just reopening for carryout after the COVID-19 lockdown. If and when I finally get more features about local brewers posted, I’ll be... This week we have another collaboration arriving: pickups for the "Christmas in July" variety beer pack from the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild
. See below for details, though they may already be sold out...
We are still into the Phase IV reopening process, knock wood. While indoor seating is still being allowed at minimal capacity, it's better than the alternative.
Another weekend of beer debuts. Crushed by Giants, the brewpub started by the team behind DryHop, will do its first release at its space in the former Heaven on Seventh on Michigan Ave.
Additionally, Obscurity Brewing & Craft Mead
has opened its brewpub at 113 W. North St, Elburn, the farther western suburbs. Their menu includes beer and mead, and a full range of pit BBQ entrees.
Also, the famed Billy Goat Tavern once again has its name on two craft beers, an IPA and Pilsner. The brands are made at Miskatonic Brewing in Darien, using new recipes aimed at the average beer drinker. Billy Goat previously had a partnership with Baderbräu, launching in 2017; that ended when the brewer suddenly went out of business six months later. Billy Goat had previously sold a draft-only "Billy Goat Dark," which was basically their tap handle on Berghoff Dark, Schlitz Dark, or whatever dark lager they could get. (Josh Noel, Chicago Tribune
The storms of the past weekend may have delayed the plans for a lot of beer places to move to Phase 4 indoor seating, mainly because they would have had to close their outdoor seating to be safe. So I may have more last-minute reopening notices to fill in later...
The Chicago area has indeed started to move into Phase 4 of re-opening following the COVID-19 panic. I have posted the ones that have made the official announcement, and condensed some of the rules patrons will need to follow. I will keep adding more announcements as the weekend approaches.
Some places have indicated on the social media that they still might need more time...
