Argus Brewery Closes in COVID-19 Downturn
Argus Brewery, in Chicago’s far south Roseland neighborhood, has announced they are closing after 10 years in operation. A story today in Patch.com carried the announcement. The father and son team of Bob and Patrick Jensen opened Argus in 2009, in an old Schlitz Brewery distribution stable at 11314 S. Front St. Argus had relied... Read more »

Friday at SoxFest with Goose Island Sox Golden Ale

Friday at SoxFest with Goose Island Sox Golden Ale
I took a day from work on Friday, January 24, to go to the Goose Island media event before SoxFest. It was all right with work, since me and my fellow drones tend to hoard vacation days and try to use them up at the end of the year. No doubt about it, the McCormick... Read more »

Surprise: Kings & Convicts buys Ballast Point from Constellation

Surprise: Kings & Convicts buys Ballast Point from Constellation
It’s a reversal of the familiar scenario in which a big-name craft brewer is bought out by a multinational “big beer” consortium. This time, the brewer has been bought back from an international consortium. On Tuesday, Kings & Convicts Brewing Co. announced they had purchased Ballast Point Brewing Co. from Constellation Brands. Constellation is a... Read more »

Chicago Brewseum Hosts Beer Culture Summit, Oct 24 - 27

Chicago Brewseum Hosts Beer Culture Summit, Oct 24 - 27

Here's an announcement of an event near and dear to my heart: beer and the culture it supports (and I don't mean yeast). I'm posting the announcement pretty directly from the news release.

The Chicago Brewseum, a nonprofit museum project exploring the historical and cultural significance of beer, announces the Beer Culture Summit—an inaugural 4-day conference and event series organized in partnership with museums, cultural organizations and breweries. The event brings together experts and enthusiasts from Chicago and around the country to exchange ideas, discuss beer-focused projects and share industry wisdom with each other and the public. The conference is produced in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History...

Bourbon County Stout's 2019 Lineup: More Barrels, Less Fruit

Bourbon County Stout's 2019 Lineup: More Barrels, Less Fruit
So yes, I’ve been sent the lineup for Goose Island’s Bourbon County Brand Stouts for 2019. The Goose has been playing games with beer nuts for the past few years, filing labels with the government for funky sounding stouts to throw people “off the trail.” Things like Horchata, Butterscotch Stouts, what have you. But the... Read more »

Chicago Craft Beer Memorial Day Week, May 27-30

Chicago Craft Beer Memorial Day Week, May 27-30
I knew I'd never be able to sort out places that might be open especially for memorial Day from those that are closed for the day, and those that aren't open Monday anyway,  But I did try to feature the establishments that have announced events, including being open and along a parade route, as below. We can now look forward to some events coming up: Tickets are on sale for the Lagunitas Beer Circus, Aug. 24 at Douglas Park in Chicago, near the Lagunitas brewery. $40 per person, details and tickets here. There's also Chicago Ale Fest, this Saturday at Grant Park; Oath Day, also Saturday at Solemn Oath in Naperville, Hyde Park Brew Fest, Saturday and Sunday at, where else, Hyde Park. Also the Grayslake Craft Beer Fest, Lemont Beer Fest, and many more that I'll work in later. And after the big merger news between Sam Adams and Dogfish Head, here are a few smaller beer mergers that I can now fit on the radar:Memorial Lake Louie Brewing, of Arena, Wisconsin, has been acquired by Wisconsin Brewing Co. of Verona. The Wisconsin State Journal says it's likely the first merger of one brick-and-mortar Wisconsin brewer with another. And in Indiana, Saint John Malt Brothers has bought out St. John's other brewer, 95ate5 Brewpub. The move comes as SJMB was being pushed out of its current location, and was building a production brewery at the same industrial park where 95ate5 is located. (NWI Times)...

Historic Dixie Highway Brewery Trail Launches

Historic Dixie Highway Brewery Trail Launches
Among the many little things I have a “thing” for are historic highways and route, and the roadside Americana that comes with them. Combine that with a “beer trail,” and you’ve got my attention. To get this story out in a timely manner, I’m posting the news release, mostly as I received it. Eight southside... Read more »
