Ten Chicago area brewers brought home medals at the Great American Beer Festival, in awards given out Saturday in Denver.

The 32nd edition of the GABF competition saw 8,496 entries, plus 101 Pro-Am and 49 Collaboration entries. Entries were submitted by 2,404 breweries from 49 states plus Washington, D.C. (no Mississippi).

The most popular category entered was a new one: Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale, with 391 entries. Yet two Chicago breweries, Alarmist and Eris, won gold and bronze, respectively, for this popular style. In all, 102 beer categories covering 167 different beer styles, with subcategories, were sampled by 293 judges from 13 countries .

Below are highlights featuring winning beers from Illinois, and the surrounding Midwestern states.

Category 12: Coffee Stout or Porter - 113 Entries

Category 14: Rye Beer - 57 Entries
Silver: Unite the Clans, Third Space Brewing, Milwaukee, WI

Category 18: Other Strong Beer - 44 Entries
Gold: Golden Prairie Doppel Alt, Argus Brewery, Chicago, IL

Category 28: Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer - 162 Entries
Bronze: Straight Jacket, Revolution Brewing, Chicago, IL

Category 34: Smoke Beer - 50 Entries
