Indeed there once was a "light" version of this cheapest of beers. Our country has come a long way!

It's a busy week heading into the 4th of July weekend. That's usually a slack time in Chicago craft beer-focused events since many of us will have other stuff scheduled. If I get enough notifications, my calendar for July 4th might just be of places that will be open.

Monday, June 27

Lagunitas Beer Dinner

Trout is hosting a beer dinner in partnership with Lagunitas Brewing. Enjoy a flight of 4 Lagunitas beers and a Lagunitas Cheesesteak, created by Chef Tim Davidson, served along frites with housemade ketchup. The meal finishes up with a sweet treat; a Lagunitas Sucks sugar cookie.
From 6-8 pm we’ll also be featuring live music from Jaik Willis and representatives from Lagunitas will be on-site to answer questions and engage with guests. The special, available after 11am, is offered for $30, inclusive of tax and gratuity. Tickets can be purchased here.

Sliced rib eye, Lagunitas IPA and Merkt’s cheddar cheese, Pils Czech Style Pilsner caramelized Vidalia onions, on a hoagie roll
Served alongside house-cut frites and housemade Aunt Sally Ketchup
Sucks Brown Sugga’ Substitute Ale Sugar Cookie
Lagunitas Flight: Pils, a well-rounded, highly drinkable IPA. A bit of Caramel Malt barley provides the richness that mellows out the twang of the hops. IPA brewed with loads of imported Saaz hops and a bottom-fermenting yeast strain that leaves it light and crisp and easy to slam. Sucks (Brown Shugga' Substitute Ale) this beer is a 'cereal medley' of barley, rye, wheat, and oats. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous flavor. Aunt Sally (A Unique Dry-Hopped Sweet Tart Sour Mash Ale) we soured the wort on the hot side with Lactobacillus for a few days and then brewed up this smooth and hoppy sour.

They’ve not been churning out some of the best sandwiches around town, but they’ve also been curating one of the best craft-focused beer lists in the city. Our brewery collaboration series continues with St. Louis legends 4 Hands Brewing Co.. We’ll be featuring three limited release beers from 4 Hands each paired with a unique creation from Chef Matt Sliwinski. Ticket price includes three dishes and three beers – gratuity not included, please tip your server or bartender!

Wild Monk will welcome craft beer enthusiasts for a dinner featuring Boulevard Brewing Co. The evening will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by a seated, multi-course meal at 6:30 p.m. Chef Mario Arroyo's menu includes beer-battered buffalo shrimp, barbecue pulled pork summer salad, smoked salmon bruschetta, glazed rosemary and garlic barbecue ribs and chocolate mint cake. Each course will be paired with a beer from Kansas City's Boulevard Brewing: Ginger Lemon Radler, The Calling IPA, KC Pils, Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale, Triple Julep, Chocolate Ale with Raspberry).

Franklin Tap is throwing it way back, tapping six beers from European breweries, many of whom have been making world class beer since the 18th century. Following the UEFA quarterfinal football match at 2 p.m., representatives from Artisanal Imports will be on site from 5-7 p.m. sampling suds and discussing why these beers have staying power in today's American craft beer scene.

Firestone Walker 2015 Agrestic Sour Ale: In the now famous SNL skit, “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”, Producer, “The Bruce Dickinson”, demands more cow bell from his band, Blue Oyster Cult. Here at the Barrelworks, we asked for more American Oak. Agrestic 16 is 100% single barrel American Oak-aged Agrestic. As in our other Agrestic Ale, a blend of American and French Oak, this is a rustic red ale, that is fermented in the Firestone Union, then aged and inoculated with B. Lambicus and lactobacillus in an American Oak barrel for 14 months. It is here where it develops its earthy funk, quenching acidity and complex flavor. Only the best barrels are singled out to be served “as is”. Barrel #16 lends more traditional American oak character—soft vanilla and coconut—than our blend. The Acidity is softer, and the finish dryer. The experience, nonpareil. Draft only, extremely limited.

Cactus Bar and Grill will hold a beer tasting event that features locally made summer brews. Andrew Quackenbush, a representative from Heartland Beverage, will be on site from 5-7 p.m., sampling four of his favorites and will discuss Chicago's booming beer scene.
Chef Glenn Pistorio's menu (guacamole; short rib nachos; chicken tortilla soup; southwest cobb salad; shrimp taco salad; fish tacos; chipotle bison burger; blackened mahi sandwich) will be available until midnight.
Featured Beers: Pollyanna Summerly Raspberry Wheat; One Trick Pony Georgia Grande Ginger Hefeweizen; Middle Brow White Light Wit with apricot and cardamom; Pig Minds Satchel Grapefruit Session Ale.

In celebration of their 25th anniversary, New Belgium Brewing Co. has teamed up with 5 titans of craft brewing – Firestone Walker Brewing Co., Allagash Brewing Co., Hopworks Urban Brewery, Rhinegeist, and Avery Brewing Co. – to create 5 variations on their flagship brew, Fat Tire, and we are bringing you all 5 collaborations on draught!
Here is the tapping schedule:
- Thurs., June 30th: Allagash Brewing Co. – “a version of Fat Tire using a Belgian yeast sourced form the Poperings region and a touch of the Allagash house Brettanomyces – expect notes of Stone fruit, sweet tart and peppercorn”
- Thurs., July 7th: Hopworks Urban Brewery – “a tart Fat Tire bringing in apple and lactobacillus to help highlight that beautiful green apple snap inherent to the original Fat Tire”
- Thurs., July 14th: Rhinegeist Brewery – “a Belgian XPA, combining a fruity Belgian yeast strain with bready-sweet European and Colorado malts for a beer to please hopheads and wine drinkers alike”
- Thurs., July 21st: Avery Brewing Co. – “a fruitier hop bill also with a dose of brett evoking notes of apricot and pineapple”

7:00 - 10:00 pm ♦ 3 Floyds Tap Takeover at Division Ale House

The Division Ale House hosts Munster, Indiana’s Three Floyds Brewing Co. for a tap takeover. Featured beers include Wigsplitter oatmeal stout, Yum Yum American session ale, Gumballhead American pale wheat ale, Zombie Dust American pale ale, Alpha King American pale ale and Icelandic Pants of the Dead American sour ale.
Chef Wally Rouse features 3 Floyds-spiked specials such as a Yum Yum Mango Salad with mixed greens, fresh mango, avocado, marinated red onions, cilantro and Yum Yum citrus vinaigrette ($9); Zombie al Pastor Tacos with Zombie Dust-marinated pork, diced onions, grilled pineapple and cilantro ($3 each); and a Fresh Mango and Mint Gumballhead Smoothie ($6).
There is no cover charge to attend and food and drink are pay-as-you-go. Beers range from $6-$8 each. The bar is open from 4 p.m.-2 a.m. on June 30 and the kitchen is open until midnight.
