I am posting for the whole week ahead as I will be pulling double shifts once again this week. If I have missed any major events, and I probably have, I can try to squeeze them in later, but I might not have time even for that.
Monday, August 3
8:00 pm ♦ LitMash
Drinking & Writing Theater @ Haymarket Pub & Brewery, 737 W. Randolph St, Chicago (312) 638-0700
A whole new kind of slam where Chicago's literary elite battle for ultimate bragging rights! $8 cover
- Genre is entirely open to interpretation and largely irrelevant. As long as what is performed was at some point written down, it counts. This includes poetry, comedy, essay, music, etc.
- The order in which competitors perform will be decided by random draw.
- Performers will be given 6 minutes (and a 20 second grace period) to wow the audience and the judges. Cues will be given to the performers to indicate time. At the 6:30 mark, the performer will be forced to leave the stage. No time penalties, just pack it up and walk.
- The performances will be judged by 5 members of the audience on a scale of 1–10 on qualities such as performance, content, originality, and the “wow” factor. Judges are generally chosen at random and will be interspersed throughout the crowd.
Building on the success of the perhaps the largest literary movement of the last century, the Slam, Chicago Slam Works presents a brand new type of show using the slam format. (Chicago Slam Works, by the way, was founded by Marc Kelly Smith, the same guy who founded the poetry slam some 28 years ago. We know a thing or two about slam.) Poetry slam has grown from a raucous bar show in Chicago to a sweeping and hugely popular format in dozens of countries throughout the world. In the last number of years, story slams and comedy slams have been popping up all over the country, led by organizations such as The Moth. There is perhaps no city in America that has a more vibrant literature and performance (”live lit”) scene than Chicago, bolstering an impressive stable of internationally recognized writers in the fields of poetry, music, creative non-fiction, and comedy. The LitMash looks to bridge the omnipresent gaps between these scenes and create the one show where the city's finest creators can square off in a highly entertaining curated slam unlike any other show out there.

Start at She-Nannigan’s, 16 W. Division St., Chicago
Beers And Ears is a post-work, mini bar hop fundraiser to raise funds for the Lookingglass Theatre. Your $30 donation entitles you to (discounted) drinks, meet new friends and wear rabbit ears.
The Lookingglass Theatre is a Tony-award winning, nonprofit theater company that produces incredible shows (like “Moby Dick,” which you should totally check out) and is dedicated to enriching the lives of Chicagoland’s youth through its Education and Community Programs. Guided by an artistic vision centered on the core values of collaboration, transformation, and invention, Lookingglass seeks to capture audiences’ imaginations leaving them changed, charged and empowered.
First, you'll purchase your ticket ($30 plus fee at Eventbrite) and you’ll be added to The List of Drinking Rabbits.
Then, on Thursday, August 6 at 6:30 PM, you’ll fall down the rabbit hole at She-Nannigan's on Division for our first stop. It is there that you will secure a wristband and yes, your rabbit ears. We will have Rabbit Representatives there to take down your name and give you said wristbands and ears.
From there, we’ll make additional stops at McFadden's and, finally, Original Mother's.
It’s a Thursday so we’re keeping it short and sweet. Whether or not you choose to physically hop from bar to bar is up to you. Just watch out for traffic. Otherwise, go nuts.
The ears thing is a nod to Alice in Wonderland. The Lookingglass Theatre’s imaginative and innovative shows represent the same spirit that Alice had when she walked through the looking glass into Wonderland.
Plus, wearing rabbit ears breaks the ice when you meet people. It really levels the playing field.
