6:30 pm ♦ Big Star Bourbon Barrel-aged Beer and Mezcal Dinner
Big Star, 1531 N. Damen Ave., Chicago 773-680-774
Big Star is home to a very special bourbon barrel with more mileage than many small cars; it has aged bourbon, mezcal and most recently a collaboration beer with Firestone Walker Brewing Co.. To launch the brew (and our little barrel's safe return home) we're hosting a four-course paired dinner.

The barrel began its journey as home to a house-selected W.L. Weller Antique 107 bourbon, before making its way to Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca, Mexico. There we worked with Fidencio to develop a bourbon barrel-aged mezcal. After a tenuous trip through Mexican customs, the mezcal made its way across country lines and back to Chicago. A barrel with two lives is a very fortunate existence, one we recounted in conversation to Firestone Walker, and thus our little barrel made its way to Paso Robles, California to blend a beer. The outcome of the project is Viaje de Roble, a hugely expressive strong ale. Having spent a year in a border crossing barrel, wood seasoned with the terroir of Kentucky, Mexico and California, the barrel is home. We're hosting a dinner to celebrate! $65 per person, plus tax and service. Please contact for tickets Participants: Chef Tom Van Lente, Beverage Director Laurent Lebec and Firestone Walker Brewers will be on-hand to field questions, and walk guests through the brewing process.

Executive Chef Brian Kwak of SideDoor (corner of Rush and Ontario Streets) collaborates with chef and brewer, Jared Rouben of Moody Tongue, to present locals with the restaurant’s inaugural guest chef dinner, “Culinary Brewed."
Rouben began his career as a chef at Michelin Star Martini House in Napa, in addition to working alongside three Michelin Star Thomas Keller of Per Se in New York City. Rouben’s previous profession sparked his “culinary brewing” business model, a new brewing genre that forges a connection between brewing and cooking.
The team at SideDoor found Rouben’s career path as an opportunity to take beer dinners to a new level with the launch of a “beer infused” guest chef dinner. In addition to Chef Kwak collaborating with Rouben in creating and presenting a six-course menu, Beverage Director Jeff Van Der Tuuk works alongside Rouben to present guests with paired brews during each course. The Culinary Brewed Dinner menu features:

First Course: Bay Scallops with avocado mousse and preserved Meyer lemon. Beer: Steeped Emperor’s Lemon Saison
Second Course: Lobster Roll with herbs. Beer: Sliced Nectarine IPA
Third Course: Pork Porchetta with charred rapini. Beer: Brandied Purple Raspberry Dubbel
Fourth Course: Cocoa Crusted Prime Rib with creamed spinach and bordelaise. Beer: Dehydrated Tangerine Cacao Wheat
Cheese Course: Midnight Moon. Beer: Steeped Emperor’s Lemon Saison
Dessert: Baltic Porter Tiramisu. Beer: Caramelized Chocolate Churro Baltic Porter.
Tickets are priced at $75 per diner, exclusive of tax and gratuity. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling 312.787.6768 or by emailing Beverage Director Jeff Van Der Tuuk at
