Festival of Wood and Barrel-Aged Beer (Sold Out)

While tickets for this event sold out in August (and I did warn you), there is always a way, if you know someone. Apparently a few batches will still show up in the Ticketmaster system.
The Illinois Craft Brewers Guild presents the 12th Annual Festival of Wood & Barrel-Aged Beer. FoBAB celebrates the brilliance of barrel-aging beer on wood, and is orchestrated by the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild. This is the country’s largest celebration of wood and barrel aged beer, highlighting styles of beer that have been aged in a wooden barrel or in contact with wood. Enjoy a sampling from our selection of beers, which may or may not be available commercially from breweries across the country.
Over 90 breweries and 300 individual beers will be pouring at tables spread within an expanded 23,000 square foot space. Catering services and food trucks will be available for purchase as well.
For the first time in our 12 year history, we will host multiple sessions over a two day period:
Friday, November 14th: 6:00 - 10:00pm (ImBIBE members receive early entry at 5:00pm)
Saturday, November 15th: 1:00 – 5:00pm, 6:00 – 10:00pm.

For those of you not attending FoBAB this year, have no fear! We will be offering the following Goose Island barrel aged goodies here at the pub today and tomorrow --
3rd Base: Oak Aged Belgian Tripel, Aged in neutral oak barrels with Brettanomyces (11.2%).
Cran Bruin: Flemish Style Sour Brown Ale with Cranberries. Aged in neutral oak barrels with Lactobacillus and Brettanomyces (5.2 %).

12:00 pm ♦ The Baller Barrel-Aged Beer Bash Part 2 (aka Tacos with Ron)

The Baller Barrel-Aged Beer Bash continues into Friday. The insanity of BA will be tapped at noon. Day two will feature barrel-aged beers from Firestone Walker Brewing Co., 3 Floyds, The Sour Note Brewing (18th Street), Revolution Brewing, New Belgium, Central Waters, The Bruery, Mikkeller, To Øl / Omnipollo. Check the Northdown web site for updated beer lists.

Perennial Artisan Ales has decided to host their annual Abraxas release at The Beer Temple! Abraxas, an Imperial Stout brewed with ancho chili peppers, cacao nibs, vanilla beans, and cinnamon sticks, is one of America’s most delicious stouts and a highlight of Perennial’s many offerings. Join us for your chance to get this epic beer. Afterwards, head down the street to Smallbar Logan Square to try several versions on Abraxas on draft!

  • Bottle sales begin at 3:00PM
  • First 100 people will get a chance to win other Perennial beers, store discounts, glassware, clothing and more!
  • A small bottle share will take place the hour before from 2:00 – 3:00 at the back entrance of the shop.

The RAM in Schaumburg is tapping Mildly Offensive, an English Mild Ale by Nathan Compton which won the Brewers of South Suburbia's Chicago Cup homebrewing competition.

Rolling off of last year’s success, we’re doing another Malort and Cheap Beer Night at Paddy Long’s! In addition to 12 hand-picked and well loved regional cheap beers, we’re unveiling another barrel-aged batch of Jeppson’s Malort. Named “Barrel #81″ in honor of Blackhawks legend and Malort icon Marian Hossa, this barrel-aged Malort has been aging in a five liter, virgin medium-char, white oak barrel for over a year. Smokey, sweet, yet intensely bitter, this stuff will not last, so folks should arrive on time if they want to have some. Team Malort, including CEO Pat Gabelick will be on hand for meet and greet.

22 years. Wow. Come drink beer Sunday. KBS will be on tap at 11am It will be gone shortly there after. We will be tapping a new (and fantastic) beer every half hour there after, all day, all night. Happy B-day Map Room!

Friends, it's 12:30 am Friday as I write this, and I'm all done in. The car my wife drives died on her this morning, so I got home and went late in the evening trying to get a proper jump on the battery. In the snow. Stupid Snow. On top of running the kids back and forth to the library, my 6 year old girl to read to shelter doggies, my 14 year old boy for a Mario Kart tournament. Which I do, because I'm Dad.

So this has left me a bit bedraggled to finish the weekend calendar list on time. I am also coming down with either a cold or the effect of drinking a Cigar City Bolita Double Nut Brown Ale which I got in 2009 and which went sour on me. What's life, though, without risk? As the wise old song goes,

"You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have The Facts of Life."

But I do have the "raw" calendar loaded with this weekend's dates, which probably be important to you, the reader. I figure if you're reading this, it's because you couldn't get tickets to the Festival of Wood and Barrel-Aged Beers, and are looking for an alternative. Don't worry, we got 'em here! Your 20-hour drive to Chicago in the snow has not been in vain. You can also the linked site to which which establishment have nailed down Bourbon County Stout tappings around Black Friday.

Me? I am attempting to help win back the honor of the ChicagoNow team in the Asian American Journalism Association's Trivia Bowl, which we had won in 2011 and 2012 before getting upset last year by Crain's Chicago Business. Upset? That's putting it mildly. If not for the fine buffet spread of Asian food, beer and wine, I'd have been perturbed!
