The Festival of (Wood and) Barrel-Aged Beer hits town this weekend, probably the biggest craft beer event in Chicago. Wish I had tickets, but I don't. Wish I could give away tickets, but I can't. But here are some pre-FoBAB events you can enjoy, with less parking hassle.

Monday, November 10

Now through November 16, Fatpour Tapworks will be holding a Local Tap Takeover with over 40 draft lines devoted to beers from Chicago and the Chicagoland Area.

Corporate Executive Chef Paul Katz and Executive Chef Tim Benedict invite the neighborhood to say cheese with the “Masters of Mac” Cook-Off: The Burbs Edition. Katz and Benedict invite three top Chicago Western Suburban chefs to compete against Old Town Pour House in creating an original mac ‘n’ cheese recipe as part of a four-serving tasting flight. Each portion will be paired with the chef’s choice of craft beer, selected from the 90 available drafts available at the restaurant. After savoring comfort food and paired sips, guests vote for their favorite mac’ n’ cheese creation, followed by the winner announcement at 8 p.m.
The mac ‘n’ cheese flight ($16) includes four 4-ounce tasting portions from Seasons 52 Chef Kyle Goebel, Reel Club Chef Chris Evangelides, and Redstone American Grill Chef James Keane as well as one created by Katz and Benedict. Guests also have the option to order the accompanying beer flight ($13), with beer matches from Lagunitas, Goose Island, Green Flash and Anderson Valley. Each mac ‘n’ cheese flight is served with a voting card providing an overview of each dish and ingredients.

Four Moon Tavern is hosting a Half Acre Beer Company/Maine Beer Company blow out - featuring a couple of offerings from each brewery as well as their collaboration IPA, Sapping Mammoth. Sapping Mammoth was brewed in Maine, and most of it stayed in that beautiful corner of the country, so take advantage of this chance to get down with it!

Chicago’s own Goddess & Grocer teams up with top chef Stephanie Izard and local favorite Revolution Brewing to host an unforgettable Thanksgiving dining event at the Goddess & Grocer’s newly relocated Bucktown location.
Chef Izard will be conducting a demo for 50 lucky guests using products from her retail line of sauces and spices, The Flavor by Stephanie Izard. Each course will be thoughtfully paired with a beer from Revolution. Seasonal favorites will be served including Gravedigger Billy, their willie wee heavy scotch ale aged in Woodford Reserve barrels for just over five months, Red Skull imperial red ale, their Oktoberfest seasonal, Fist City and Eugene Porter.

We’ll be teaming up for a party at Stone City Saloon in Romeoville. Every Wednesday these guys have $1 sliders but on this day they’ll also have a slough of options from each brewery.

Thursday, November 13

On November 13th-20th Upland Brewing Company will open an online lottery for the release of four of its sour ales: Malefactor, Strawberry, Raspberry, and Cherry.
The lottery will open at noon EDT on Thursday November 13th and close at noon on November 20th. To enter visit www.uplandsours.eventbrite.com.
You must specify your preferred pick-up location (Bloomington Brewpub or Indianapolis Tasting Room in Broad Ripple) at the time of entry, and pickup locations cannot be changed after a reservation request has been made.
Lottery winners will be randomly drawn and notified via email on November 24th, and can purchase the sour ale(s) they selected at their preferred pickup location from December 3rd through December 17th. Sour brewery tours hosted by head brewer, Caleb Staton, will be offered Saturday December 13th at 3pm and 4pm. Tours will be limited to people who have a confirmed reservation. Email sours@uplandbeer.com to reserve a spot.
Bottles may be picked up at the Bloomington Brew Pub 11am-midnight Monday through Thursday, 11am-1am Friday and Saturday, and noon to midnight Sunday, or at the Indianapolis Tasting Room 4pm-10pm Monday through Thursday and noon to midnight Friday and Saturday. Please note the Indianapolis Tasting Room cannot sell carryout on Sunday, in accordance with Indiana state law. Each bottle will cost $25 plus applicable sales tax.

We are very pleased and excited to announce the second annual “Couldn’t get a Ticket to FOBAB Barrel Aged Beer Event” as recently reported in the New York Times Travel Section. Each year Chicago hosts one of the great beer festivals in the world, the Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beer (FOBAB) where scores of breweries from around the country converge to showcase the finest of barrel aged liquids. Tickets go on sale well in advance and are gobbled up in minutes leaving many out in the cold, noses pressed to the glass, dreaming of vanilla, bourbon, oak and caramel notes, commonly featured in these barrel aged wonders. Our annual event is a humble attempt to satisfy those beer lovers who couldn’t get a ticket to FOBAB and, truthfully, those who could. Though the list is not yet complete this year we will feature 20+ beers aged in retired barrels of Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, Woodford Reserve, Templeton Rye, Kentucky Bourbon, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Old Forrester and new American Oak to name a few. The event will kick-off on Thursday, November 13th and will continue into the weekend and through the following weeks as supplies last. Tuman’s hosts Anderson Valley Brewing Company the night before FoBAB. We'll welcome Ian McCarten, Anderson Valley brand ambassador/Midwest sales manager and other special guests for beer education during the pre-party and tap takeover. Tuman’s dedicates 12 of 28 tap handles to Anderson Valley beers from 7 p.m.-2 a.m., there is no cover charge to attend, and beers range from $5-$9 each.

The Division Ale House welcomes Une Année (which means “one year” in French), a seasonally-minded Chicago-based brewery that focuses on French-and Belgian-style craft beers. The event features an array of autumn-release draft beers, which range from $6-$8 each, including Oort Belgian Porter, Dubbel Abbey Ale and Hopsurd Double IPA, plus the year-round Maya Belgian IPA. This will be the first release of Airing of Grievances Russian Imperial Stout for 2014. Free to attend with food and drink on consumption. Chef Wally Rouse augments the regular menu with beer-spiked food specials (available 4 p.m.-midnight, normal kitchen hours).
The bar holds a raffle with grand prizes including a pair of Blackhawks tickets and an Une Année brewery tour. This is a rare opportunity to see the inner-workings of the West Town brewery, which currently does not have a tasting room and/or public tours. The winners must be present to win; the raffle is held at 10 p.m. and the bar is open until 2 a.m.
