Chicago's Craft Beer Events, August 19-22

Chicago's Craft Beer Events, August 19-22
The famed Bloomington-Normal brewer will be tapping more beer in Chicago.

As of this writing, I have only the two DESTIHL events I teased in my last article. But you'll be busy the next day because it's time to hunt down FoBAB tickets in the no doubt fewer than 30 seconds they'll be available.

Monday, Aug. 19

BrickStone Bottles Coming to Chicago
Binny's Beverage Depot, Chicago area stores
BrickStone, the small brewpub from Bourbonnais finally has some bottles making their way to the Chicago area. Their award winning pale ale will lead the pack along with a cherry ale and Shady Summer, a wheat beer with lemon. Look for these beers in 22oz. bottles in the Chicagoland Binny's the week of August 19th. (There's a chance it may turn up at other retail accounts; I've got this info from the Binny's website).

DESTIHL Chicago Debut Tapping
Paddy Long's Irish Pub, 1028 W. Diversey Ave., Chicago (773) 290-6988
Paddy Long's has confirmed to me they'll be tapping DESTIHL beers, and seem to be the earliest in the Chicago market. They are expecting (but won't be sure until the kegs come in) the Abbey's Single, Hoperation Overload double IPA, and the Saint Dekkera Barrel-Aged Belgian Sour version of the Hawaii Five-Ale (made with five different fruits). Some of the beers may be tapped at opening, with the Saint Dekkera going up at 7:00 pm.

Tuesday, Aug. 20

(See our event entitled "Hopleaf Beer School" to purchase the whole course for the discount price.)
Aug 20: The World of Wheat: There's nothing quite like a thirst-quenching, spicy and crisp wheat beer in the summer. Wheat is the base of many famous styles, which we'll discuss while tasting the great examples.

7:00 - 9:00 pm ♦ Dogfish Head Ancient Ales Dinner
Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine, IL (847) 358-9150
We're going back... waaaaaay back with Dogfish Head's latest dinner series. To where exactly? Well, Rome, Finland, Honduras, China- just jump in our time machine and come along for the ride!
Since 1999, Dogfish Head has worked closely with molecular archaeologist Dr. Patrick McGovern to bring ancient brewing history back to life. The resulting ancient ales transport modern beer connoisseurs to a time when brewers were unencumbered by purity laws, style rules and bottom lines.
Juniper berries, chai, cocoa nibs, ancho chilis, muscat grapes, saffron and honey are just some of the unique ingredients that flavor these Ancient Ales and make them perfect for food pairings!
Join Zach from Dogfish Head as he transports you to another time through Ancient Ales!
Featured beers and their pairings will be:
Chateau Jiahu - Pankoras
Sah'tea - Venison Chili spiced with ginger
Theobroma - Roasted Chicken Mole
Birra Etrusca Bronze - Past Bolognaise
Midas Touch - Wild Mushroom Risotto
Food will include a 5-course meal to pair with each beer, specifically recommended by Dogfish Head.
Each ticket purchased includes a commemorative glass, coaster, and poster. Tickets are $65 through Eventbrite.

The Bluebird Chicago, 1749 N. Damen Ave., Chicago 773-486-2473
Artisanal Imports is an importer of specialty beers from England, Germany, Belgium and beyond. Their portfolio of fine ales and lagers is broad and represents a wide range of beer styles, but it is not their mission to collect every small brewery across Europe. Artisanal believes in working in full partnership with their breweries and are careful to select beers that are high quality and interesting but that do not overlap one to the next.
Join us alongside certified Cicerone and bishop of Belgian beer Adam Schulte, as we dive into their selectively expanding library of beers. Touching on the wares of Bockor, Meantime, St Feuillien, Sunner, Bosteels, and La Trappe  just to name a few, a tasting surely to be remembered.

12:00 pm ♦ Ticket Sales for Festival of Wood & Barrel Aged Beer
On this Brown Paper Tickets link.
The 2013 Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beer takes place Saturday, November 16 at the Skyline Loft of the Bridgeport Art Center, 1200 W. 35th St., Chicago. Tickets go on sale today at the Brown Paper Tickets link above, $50 plus fees.
First Session: 1:00 - 5:00PM (ImBIBE members gain early access at 12:00PM)
Second Session: 6:00 - 10:00PM
This is the country's largest celebration of wood and barrel aged beer, produced by the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild and highlighting styles of beer that have been aged in a wooden barrel or in contact with wood. Enjoy a sampling from our selection of beers, which may or may not be available commercially from breweries across the country. Attendees will be treated to a vast array of exotic flavors from some of the rarest craft beers. Craft beers aged in new or used wine, whiskey or Bourbon barrels take on many of the characteristics of that libation. Brewers of traditional or not-so-traditional Belgian-inspired beers often prefer used barrels so different resident micro organisms will impart a refreshing tart and acidic character. Fruit, spices, coffee and syrup may also compliment the already complex character of wood-aged beers.
Long before the advent of stainless steel, the use of wooden barrels imparted many unique characteristics to beer. In many ways, the U. S. craft brewer has come full circle, returning to the roots of brewing while demonstrating creativity unmatched anywhere in the world.
