But congratulations to Jared Rouben, former brewmaster at the Goose Island brewpubs, who has announced plans for his own brewery, Moody Tongues, in the Pilsen neighborhood, hopefully by the end of the year.

The Great Taste of the Midwest is one of the premier beer festivals in the United States. On the second Saturday in August, over one hundred brewpubs and microbreweries from the Midwest come to beautiful Olin-Turville Park overlooking lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin, to share beer and good times with six thousand patrons.
Ticket prices are $50, and they have been sold out since May. If this is the first time you've heard on this event, stay clicked to this space, because I try to post an early warning of when tickets go on sale.

Saturday & Sunday, Aug. 10 & 11

Enjoy bears and beers, lions and lagers, and aardvarks and ales at Brookfield Zoo’s second annual Zoo Brew, held in collaboration with Burke Beverage, Inc.
Zoo Brew is bigger and better with more than 60 craft beers represented by 24 breweries. Guests can enjoy samples from the following breweries: Abita, Argus, Belukus Marketing, Blue Moon, Boulevard, Chicago Beer Company, Guinness, Dogfish Head, Firestone Walker, Hopothesis, Lakefront Brewery, Leinenkugel’s, Magic Hat, Modelo, New Belgium, Newcastle, New Holland, Pyramid, Revolution, Samuel Adams, Sierra Nevada, Southern Tier, and Wild Onion (Here's the current beer line-up).
This unique beer-tasting event would not be complete without pairings with great food. Menu items such as hot dogs, brats, burgers, nachos, jumbo soft pretzels, popcorn, and much more will be available for purchase.
The stein-size fun also includes live music and an opportunity to bid on silent auction items, such as branded beer tenders, specialty brews, and beer-themed memorabilia. On Saturday, guests can rock out to live music by Chicago-based cover band Six to Midnight, who will be playing party rock dance tunes by Pink, Michael Jackson, Green Day, Garth Brooks, and many more. The grooves continue on Sunday with a performance by the Hot Sauce Committee, a Chicago-based band that combines ‘90s hip-hop with guitars and club beats for a high-energy performance.
Zoo Brew is for adults ages 21 and over; children will not be allowed to attend the event. The cost is $45 per person (zoo members receive a $10 discount) and includes beer samples, a commemorative tasting glass, admission to Brookfield Zoo, and parking. Additionally, there is a special discount ticket of $25, which includes unlimited soft drinks, for designated drivers. Photo IDs are required. There are limited tickets available. We've got something fun up our sleeve for this month's tapping. We have a Trifecta Tapping planned:

  • Replicale (Illinois pale hopped with Saphir). This is the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild ReplicAle project. All Guild members' ReplicAles will be featured at the August 17 Oak Park Microbrew review.
  • Hylowe Rye Pale (Max & Jenny's Anniversary brew)
  • Buckledown and Drink Up (uber hopped American Pale collab that we did the with the Buckledown guys)

And because August is the month of summer vacations, we're throwing the schedule away for this meeting and making this available to our union members all day. Just come on in, present your Local 737 union card to your server or bartender and they'll set you up with a flight of all three.
Now, you'll probably want to take some home with you as well, so we're offering up a very special, one day only $10 Growler Fill on any of these three beers. New growlers are an additional $5 ea, but if you bring us a clean one to fill, we'll happily re-use your glass. This offer is only valid for card carrying Local 737 Union Members, so make sure you have your card with you.

Pipeworks Tasting at The Aviary

The Aviary is pleased to announce the Aviary and Pipeworks Brewing Company's first project together. We will be joined by Bobby Minelli from the Wicker Park based brewery for an open-house style tasting of 7 Pipeworks beers. Chef Brochu will craft 7 dishes for the event to match each beer.
This is a rare opportunity to taste several of Chicago's best beers in one night, and a perfect chance to get a taste of what's going on in the culinary world of the Aviary.

12:00 - 4:30 pm ♦ Highwood Craft Beer Festival
Everts Park, 130 Highwood Ave., Highwood, IL
Celebrating the best of local, Midwest and American craft beers, Highwood’s Craft Beer Festival will feature many seasonal and year-round brews from small local independent breweries to some of the best-known microbreweries nationwide. Attendees will be able to sample from 35 breweries offering some 70 different beers.
VIP and general admission tickets will go on sale June 22nd, and be available at A limited number of discounted early bird tickets are available at $50 for VIP entrance starting at noon, or $35 for general admission starting at 1pm. Attendees will receive a wristband, a brewers list card, a reusable sampling glass, drink tickets for three ounce beer samples, and a bag of pretzels with a string to make their own pretzel necklace. A variety of food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available from Highwood’s diverse restaurants. The event will also feature live entertainment from local bands.
Highwood’s Craft Beer Festival will be donating a portion of its proceeds to local charities.

Co-produced by Seven Generations Ahead and the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild, the Oak Park Micro Brew Review will feature tastings of over 100 craft beers from more than 50 microbreweries across Illinois and the Midwest. But this is not just your average beer festival; proceeds from the event help fund SGA’s non-profit work to build healthy, environmentally sustainable communities in the Midwest. So along with celebrating the microbrews of the most skilled craft brew masters in the region, attendees can also celebrate sustainable living while sampling select food tastings that incorporate organic food from local farmers.
