Chicago Craft Beer Events, July 26 - August 1

Brewpub Openings:

I can't kid myself I'll be able to squeeze these out as separate articles, so let me let you know:

Chain O'Lakes Brewing Company, which first announced plans to open in 2010, has held a soft opening last weekend, offering tours of their new facility, and beers from other nearby brewers. Their own beer is currently fermenting and an official launch date is to be determined. The new venture is located at 3425 Pearl St., McHenry, IL, the site where McHenry Brewery closed up shop as McHenry County's last local brewer in the 1950s. Marine Corps veteran Curt Ames and his wife Linda are driving the project, which plans to start with a brewpub with growler fills, eventually expanding to kegs for other bars.

Hopvine Brewing Co. is the new name for the former Limestone brewpub which was forced to vacate its home in Plainfield two years back. While the original site is now Nevin's Brewing Company, Limestone principal Steve Caton picked a spot at 4030 Fox Valley Center Drive, Aurora, and ran into typical delays in licensing and/or securing equipment. Limestone brewmaster Ken McMullen is back, and the brewpub is hiring restaurant staff. To celebrate, Ken will have a cask-conditioned version of his Indian Brown Ale at the Midwest Brewers Festival, coming up in Plainfield August 24.

Drinking Buddies

Many times I've joked about wanting to see a movies like "Sideways," only with craft beer instead of wine. Well, "Drinking Buddies" is not that kind of movie. The wine geeks in "Sideways" were, well, losers. The principals in this movie are young Chicagoans who just happen to work at Revolution Brewing. The movie's now available for streaming rental through iTunes, before opening in theatres August 23. I was fortunate to screen it, and will have a few thoughts on it later on.
