Two big brew events in Chicago this weekend. Again, I apologize for not talking about them earlier; I am still focused on academic work and finding a paying job'

Friday, Feb. 8
5:00 - 8:00 pm ♦ Firkin Friday: Schlenkerla "Oak Smoke" Eiche (Smoked Doppelbock)
The Bavarian Lodge, 1800 Ogden Ave, Lisle, IL (630) 241-4701
A cask-conditioned ale dispensed by gravity directly from the firkin, tapped right on the bar counter. Firkin Friday Feature for February 1st, 2013: Aecht Schlenkerla "Oak Smoked" Eiche Doppelbock (Smoked Bavarian Doppelbock, 8% ABV). Before we get to our colorful description of this brew, let it be known that this, in our humble opinion, is one of the ten best beers brewed anywhere on the planet. Add to this the gravity cask format, and you've got something utterly amazing. One of the best beers in the world, available in a rare wooden cask format, right here in little old Lisle, Illinois. While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers.
