Chicago Craft Beer Calendar, December 17 - 20, Non-Apocalyptic Edition

Personally, I thought I was going to be able to avoid this end of the world bullhockey, but the craft beer community has been turning it into an excuse to drink good beer. No one's offering specials on buckets of Bud to toast the end of the world. So I'll have a special article shortly with some of the events of December 20, and some beer suggestions. Meantime:

To celebrate the upcoming holidays, we're releasing 12 spiced, blended, steeped and hopped beers; through the 24th. We're tapping a new beer every day, starting at 11:30am, and will be served all day or until it kicks. Here's a list of the remaining beers:

5:00 - 9:00 pm ♦ Jonny Quest Thinks We’re Sell-Outs – Black IPA Release

Tuesday is the release of "Jonny Quest Thinks We’re Sell-Outs" – the Black IPA Collaboration between Begyle Brewing and Dryhop Brewers. Stop by Northdown, where the beer gets tapped at 5pm. You can also chat up Greg, Brant and the Begyle guys from 7-9 pm. Starting at 7pm, the first 10 to order a Black IPA will get one of Dryhop's fancy Belgian snifters to take home. Black IPAs are an emerging beer style roughly defined as an ale with IPA-level hopping and a distinct toasty dark malt character. It’s typically hoppier than a strong porter and lacks the roastiness and body of a strong stout. Expressive dry hopping is also common. Jonny Quest, is very sessionable at 5.3% ABV with a medium body. We showcase four very sought after hop varieties: Simcoe, Galaxy, Citra, and Cascade. We were very excited to use Hop Head Farms’ Cascade hops, grown and pelletized in Michigan, for the first time in one of our beers. All four hop varieties are showcased in the dry hopping process. What you are left with is a very citrus and floral nose and a beer that finishes with a mild bitterness and toasted malt notes.

7:00 pm - 1:00 am ♦ Dark Night Darker Beers

Acre celebrates one of the darkest nights of the year with its third annual Dark Night, Darker Beers event. Acre’s staff will tap twenty-six of the darkest beers they could get their hands on. Most of the beers are hard to find, including several vintage beers aged in Acre’s cellar together with many others that are rarely seen on draft. Beverage manager Bill Allen has been working on this event since about the time last year’s Dark Nights event concluded. “Over this past year, I have been picking up unique dark beers for the Dark Night event as it is very difficult to order most of these beers at the last minute and many of the vintage beers require additional cellaring time to reach their peak flavor profile.” Acre’s Executive Chef, Mike Lathrop has put together several menu items that pair up particularly well with the night’s dark beer line up, including a crispy lamb belly with slow cooked green appetizer, and charred skirt steak tacos with smoked onions, black beans and guajillo salsa. Two different beer flights will also be offered: an oyster flight to compliment that night’s half shell oyster selection and a chocolate flight to pair up with a specially selected assortment of chocolates. The beer list includes the following plus five other secret surprises: Three Floyds Black Unicorn; Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous & Mixtape Vol. 2; Port Brewing Santa’s Little Helper; Allagash Black; Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout; Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout; The Bruery Smoking Wood; Southern Tier Iniquity; Goose Island Night Stalker, Bourbon County Stout & Big John; Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti; Firestone Walker Wookey Jack; Founders Breakfast Stout; Ommegang Seduction; Lion Stout; Solemn Oath La Grippe; Half Acre Two Tugs; Jolly Pumpkin Noel de Calabaza 2011; and Two Brothers Cask Conditioned Northwinds with Vanilla Beans.

Thursday, Dec. 20
