Chicago Black Friday weekend craft beer Events

I know the big event of Black Friday is already sold out, even after they doubled the number of sessions. Still you want some relief from incessant news coverage of the few hundred idiots lined up at Squalid-Mart in their pajamas to save 30 bucks on an X-box...

Winning Brews at Chicago's Festival of Barrel-Aged Beers

Winning Brews at Chicago's Festival of Barrel-Aged Beers
Another November, another Festival of Wood- and Barrel-Aged Beers has come and gone. The 10th annual edition in fact. Tickets for this event sold out back in August, although the canny and connected could usually score a ticket from a friend or listserv member. For 2012, FoBAB moved to the Bridgeport Arts Center, 1200 W. 35th St. an industrial building rehabbed into a arts space and event center. As with previous locations, long lines waited for the start of both the afternoon and evening session, for the chance to sample 173 beers from 60 breweries. Each beer was unique, but all shared one characteristic: they were aged in barrels, some reused liquor or wine barrels, some in new toasty oak or other woods...

Chicago Thanksgiving Week Craft Beer Calendar

Chicago Thanksgiving Week Craft Beer Calendar
First order of business is to recognize my fantastic teammates with the ChicagoNow Trivia Challenge Team #1. Say "Hey" to T.R. Slyder, Reggie Nievera, Curtis Shaw Flagg, Exavier Pope, Kelley Farrell and Kaley Mullin Once again, we pulled off a last second squeaker to beat teams from the likes of Crain's Chicago Business and WBEZ to win the AAJA-Chicago Trivia Bowl Saturday afternoon! This year we fielded a second ChicagoNow team, all of whom were new to the grind of trivia tournaments. They came in a respectable ninth. Here are my selected highlights for the week leading up to Thanksgiving. Nearly all beer venues are closed on Thanksgiving Day. I only know the Tribes Alehouse in Tinley Park and Mokena will be open, and others may be, so be certain, of course, to call ahead to your favorite venue if the turkey gets ruined. I will have a "Black Friday Weekend" calendar page up soon. Just a note: if you wanted to go to the Black Friday event at Goose Island's Clybourn brewpub, that is sold out...

Chicago Weekend Craft Beer Highlights, November 16-18

Chicago Weekend Craft Beer Highlights, November 16-18
I'm going to try and keep the calendar feature running again. This is thanks to an app I wrote to better format listings from my Google Calendar, which should cut down on my editing time. Besides, I need to offer alternatives for those of us without FoBAB tickets!

Friday, Nov. 16

3:00 pm • 5730.06 Miles of Beer Local Option, 1102 W. Webster Ave., Chicago (773) 348-2008 Local Option hosts “5730.06 Miles of Beer.” Beer nerds from around the world will flock to 1102 W. Webster to bask in the glory of superb draught offerings from a collection of breweries spanning two continents and seven countries. The event’s name evinces the distance between St. Feuillien (Le Roeulx, Belgium) and Green Flash (San Diego California) who collaborated in the creation of two beers on the list: Friendship Brew – a black saison that utilizes European and American hops, Belgian yeast and spices – and Biere de l’Amitie, a contemporary take on the blond saison with rye and wheat malt, and dry-hopped with Amarillo. Intrepid souls will be able to try the first offering from the world’s most recently anointed Trappist brewery Stift Engelszell (Austria)...
