I beg to report that various family stuff and job hunting activities are keeping me away from the ol' bloggin' post. I may miss the next update of events for the week ahead, and unfortunately, I can't say it's because I'm at the sold out event below. But while composing this, I am sampling beer for my 2,400th RateBeer.com rating, which you click to just a few words back. It's not local, so I wouldn't feel right talking about it here.

SmallBar has two special fish dishes that will be available Fridays during Lent (through April 6). Chef Justin White takes the “Friday Night Fish Fry” to whole new level with these hand-crafted plates. These special meals also include a pint of beer, carefully selected to compliment the delicious meal. The dishes and beer pairings are listed below. The Dishes: Beer battered white fish with creole remoulade and shaved lemon cabbage on a buttered bun with choice of side. Served with a pint of SmallBar Pale Ale (Two Brothers) for $13 Half a pan seared Wisconsin trout over Yukon potato puree with braised leeks and lemon butter. Served with a pint of Half Acre Daisy Cutter for $15.
6:00 - 9:00 p.m. • Goose Island Old Town Yard Release with Brewmaster Brett Porter

Goose Island Brewmaster Brett Porter will stop by Bavarian Lodge to launch a new series of limited release, draft-only, small batch brews. Seeing as the first offering, "Old Town Yard," is a German-Style Helles, where better to have a release party than The Bavarian Lodge! Old Town Yard is a beer conceived of and brewed by Goose Island brewers Gavin and John. Inspired by travels and time spent brewing in Germany, the brewers decided to craft their interpretation of the classic Helles style. The resulting beer is a bright golden lager with a delicate malt sweetness, grassy Noble hop character, and a crisp refreshing body. 7:00 p.m. • Two Brothers Beer Dinner

Francesca's Winter Beer Dinner features beers from Two Brothers Brewing Company in Warrenville. This four-course meal is $35 per person, excluding tax and gratuity. The meal starts with Polpo Grigliato, grilled octopus with fagioli gigantic, marinated sundried tomatoes and lemon vinaigrette, which is paired with Two Brothers' Ebel's Weiss, a German Hefeweizen. This is followed by Polpetti Agnello , lamb meatballs with spicy San Marzano tomato sauce, arugula and lemon. This makes an excellent partner for Cane & Ebel red rye ale. The third course features Gnocchi con Pancetta, sweet potato gnocchi with cipollini onions, pancetta and brown-butter sage. This is paired with Resistance, an India Pale Ale. The final course features Brasato di Bue, beer-braised beef ribs with parsnip puree paired with Two Brothers' Northwind beer.

(Again, if you know a guy who knows a guy, he might know a guy who might need to sell spare tickets) For the eighth consecutive year, CBS sponsors Day of the Living Ales, a walk-around real ale tasting featuring the best cask conditioned ales from Chicagoland breweries and some very special guests. We’ll also be serving fine meats, cheeses, and other appetizers to help you consume responsibly. As always, DotLA will feature the region’s largest selection of real ales (40+ casks), all of them coddled by our own staff of experienced cellarmen, trained in the UK to care for and serve real ale. Remember, a properly served real ale is neither cloudy, flat, nor warm; rather, it is bright, with a gentle carbonation and served at cellar temperature. Accept no substitute! Attendees will be able to sample the beers and then vote for the 2012 Champion Real Ale of Chicagoland. Day of the Living Ales will be held over two sessions: 1-5 pm (4:45 last call) and 6-10 pm (9:45 last call). Only 250 tickets per session will be sold. Schnitzel Tinga Chilaquiles $12: thin, crispy Gunthorp chicken thighs and caper, honey, tomatillo salsa over fried corn chips, topped with house chorizo simmered in chipotle tinga sauce. Suggested Pairing: 5 Rabbit.
An Influenced Goulash $13: slow roasted Gunthorp pork shoulder and cascabel pepper stew over coriander, lard braised cabbage and poached yucca with shaved jalapeno and breakfast radish. Suggested Pairing: 5 Lizards.
